How Do Extended Warranties Work?

Need some advise here. Our tow vehicle (Ford) went into "limp" mode yesterday and we wound up at a Ford dealership for diagnosis and repair. Turns out the high-pressure fuel pump is at fault, requiring a "cab off" replacement. I showed my extended warranty to the service manager who called the insurance company (CornerStone United). They told him my contract covers NONE of the repair cost - estimated at $3,500. I gave him the go-ahead to do the fix, but want to challenge the refusal of coverage. I have read the contract in detail and see no clause that would negate coverage of this repair. What would you do, to challenge this decision? I have the phone number of the insurance folks, but I'm wondering if I should first contract the dealer who sold me the contract first? My suspicion is that the insurance folks are just playing the game, hoping I won't pay attention to the details? Any advise based on your experience or knowledge would be greatly appreciated!

In the same link above when the engineering defect HPFP fails, metal particles likely will damage the injector ceramic ball valve.
So if I understand what you're saying, I should be concerned that metallic particles could reach any of the injectors themselves? Shouldn't the fuel filter catch this, or is the filter between the fuel pump and the injector pump?
There is no filter after the injection pump, so the comment about metal particles is correct.
But I have to admit this is the first time I have heard of a "fuel injector rail pump".
I suggest this bears checking out to make sure it is not a BS excuse. Get the dealer to describe exactly HOW MANY fuel pumps are on your truck. It may be as few as ONE!
The Bosch HPFP used on the Ford 6.7L diesel (and others)is known for expensive failures and for Ford's tendency to deny a claim. Are you out of your 100K OEM warranty?

BTW - your original question? Unfortunately what you are seeing seems to be the way MOST of them work!

Which engine? The 6.7L Powerstroke with the Bosch CP4 fuel-pump?

If so, have a complete fuel system check done. The Bosch CP4 has been a problem in every vehicle it's been used on (VW, Audi, Ford, etc)

Extended service contracts are rarely a good deal as you have now fallen victim too. The only time I would even consider one is if it comes directly from the manufacturer

Well it turns out the insurance company has us by the gon***, since the specific part that failed isn't the "fuel pump" itself (which is a separate and additional pump), but the "fuel injector rail pump". That specific part is only covered with the company's "premium" policy, which we don't have. So the lesson is to not buy a contract like this without reading ALL the details. There's a reason certain part failures are only covered by higher premiums! Thanx to all who have responded, nice to know there are folks out there who are willing to share their knowledge & opinions

If it's the The Bosch CP4 a number of posts say
" file a claim online with the NHTSA BEFORE you take your car in for service."

They have to tell why they are denying coverage. Have you called them yourself and asked? With some of these so-called warranties work can only be performed by the selling dealer.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

Whenever we have bought a used vehicle we have bought extended warranty. Of the 5x we bought it we had claims worth well over the policy price.
We have had a new motor in one vehicle, new granny in another and various other repairs.
Once we had a dealer say...not covered. We were going to give the ok and sign saying we would pay the bill. While there another customer told us not to. The insurance company would not pay us back after we already did pay the bill. We called the ins company ourselves, within an hour it was sorted out and ins covered full amount.
I would get in touch with the insurance company as soon as possible and if still a no contact authorities that have been mentioned already.

Call the selling dealer. They were the agents for the extended warranty company. If they fail to take proper action, contact an attorney or file a claim in small claims court.

Beemer, not asking anyone here to evaluate the contract, just advise on how you'd pursue this situation. And there is NO provision in my contract for challenging denial of coverage.
