How often do you buy new trailer?

We were having a conversation and this question was discussed. Just wondering....how often, on average, do you guys trade in/buy new trailers and why?

Ex & I were not from camping families, but found that by tent camping we could afford to travel more often and longer distances than by staying in motels. We always questioned why someone would want a class A or trailer - "that's not really camping!"

Then we got older. . . we adopted three children and still loved tent camping. The we got older still and became legal guardians of a toddler. We bought a van conversion. The older kids still tent camped near the van, but the toddler did not enjoy the outdoors at all, and doesn't to this day.

We drifted away from camping.

I anticipated a 2013 retirement & full-timing lifestyle so bought a 1996 Damon class A-perfect for one person! Then an opportunity for a promotion presented itself. The promotion would be an increase in salary, helping me save $ for my full-timing plans and also increase my pension. I now planned to retire in 2015.

This past summer ex and I took three of our grandchildren tent camping. Enjoyable, but being 40 years older I now see why folks want RV instead of tents.

However,like EcoBullet, "in April the grandkids came back to live". I have two grandchildren living with me. The class A is not set up for 3 people.

I have no idea what the future holds as far as my full-timing plans, but I am glad to see that others change camping styles and vehicles so I don't feel so bad about contemplating changing from my 1996 MH to a trailer.

In addition, I drink 0 cups of coffee per day whether camping or not. Just please don't take a poll on how much Diet Pepsi people drink while camping!

Started Tent Camping in the 90's, then a Popup which was too much of a pain to setup and take down, had no place to put anything, and sucked in wind and rain. Got a 77 GMC motorhome that I refurbished, used ti for a few years and then got tired of dealing with an old GM car underpinnings when the Olds motor spun a bearing. Got a 24" 2010 Nomad TT about 3 years old and have done extensive mods on it and plan to keep it for a long time. My old Popup has gone from one neighbor to a second, as it still lives on my street. The GMC is for sale, probably sold, waiting for a deposit.


Get a good one, take care of it, customize it to your liking, and you should be able to keep it for 10-20 years so long as you don't outgrow it.

Or, depends on my trailer needs.

Wow, we have gone on this RV forum from how many RV's we have owned to how many cups of coffee we drink at camp. Well, being on the west coast we are three hours behind the east coast folks so I am on my second cup. But, will catch up to you later.

This has been with your one exception a fun, light hearted, enjoyable read by over 40 participants that did not think it was stupid or senseless.

You always have the option of not participating in any discussion if you think it is stupid or senseless. Your mommy probably told you growing up that if you did not have anything nice to say then don't say anything. Good advice, really!!! And that just might make it a better site, what you advocate you are trying to do!!!!

IMO all here that answering a senseless post... Whats the point as all the answers are all over the place as it would be...... As it will be of course based on most likely income and preference...

Tenting for 5 seasons.

2013 we got a 2006 hybrid 19ft Starcraft. Hated the tip outs to sleep on. Landed on the ground once. Husband's error for setting it up!

2014 new 288 rls Trailmaster. We have had it since May.

Looking this weekend to trade in for something bigger .

I also enjoyed reading the responses to this "stupid" post. Occasionally, I'll read a post that I regard as "frivolous" or even inane, but I don't feel any compelling push to let them know I think it's "stupid". I just go on, sometimes shaking my head. I read a goodly part of this forum for enjoyment, and I think a lot of others do so, also. Maybe we could do a survey...

I drink 1 20 oz mug of coffee and then switch to tea.

We bought our first new TT in 2008 as empty nesters. In 2010, 3 grandkids came to live with us. After a week of making the dinette and couch into beds, having no closet for the kid's clothes, and noticing that one tire was nearly worn out due to a bent axle, we decided to get a longer quad bunk TT in 2011. In January 2013 the kids moved back to their mother's. After retiring in January 2014 and dragging the long sucker through 30 mph+ crosswinds for 3K+ miles, we decided a shorter trailer was in order. We bought the current trailer in March, and in April the grandkids came back to live. Anyone care to guess how long we keep this one?

We like to keep them until our needs change. No set timeframe. It's nice to own it free and clear for a while also.

Interestingly, the dealership told us that most folks trade theirs in every two or three years. Judging by the amount / age of the trades on their lot I'd say there's some truth to that.

I have never bought a new trailer and I never will. I can buy a couple year old trailer for half of a new trailer or less and after the first camping trip there is virtually no difference between the two. I will never buy any RV through a dealer either! That is just another complete waste of money. I would rather look an owner in the eye and ask them what issues they have had with the trailer? If they say they have never had any issues... RED FLAG!!!

A new trailer is just as likely to leak as a used trailer. I trust my ability to find the damage from a leak on a few year old trailer. If there is a leak on a new from the lot trailer the damage will not be apparent unless if it is a huge leak and there has been a huge amount of precipitation to make the leak apparent. Yeah a new trailer does have a warranty... great if I want to skip a whole camping season while a dealer butchers a brand new trailer fixing the poor workman ship from the factory.

I am very glad there are a huge number of people that are willing to waste money buying brand new trailers... I will just never be one of them!

I average about 5 years in between trailers. Sometimes I pay cash, sometimes I take advantage of the interest deduction on my taxes. If I don't always pay cash for everything does that me a lesser person than those that do? Some people seem to be awfully proud of that...
