Jay Flight 6 gallon water heater

Looked at 2016 Jay Flight with 6 gallon hot water heater. My first camper several years ago had a 6 gallon heater and we got by with it but did have concerns. Since then we've had doing but 10 gallon tanks.

Are the new 6 gallon heater better than the old heaters or should I keep looking?

Brand for Brand (6 gal for 6 gal OR 10 for 10).....pretty easy as they use same size opening whether propane only or electric/propane

Propane only to combo......
Need a spare Circuit Breaker
Run wiring

Atwood....need to run DC and AC wiring for the AC cause they use DC controls to trigger AC for element

Suburban.....AC wiring to OEM On/OFF switch-----done

RV water heaters are limited....due to space

6 gallon work......just get one with electric & propane then heat with both for fastest recovery (when electric is available)

10 gallon have 65% more available hot water than 6 gallon.

Atwood 6 gallon have smaller burners (lower btu/hr) than 10 gallon (8,800/btu vs 10,000/btu)
Suburban have same burner 12,000/btu whether it is 6 or 10 gallon

Thermostatic Mixing Valves can increase duration of available hot water BUT they have issues also.......clogging up and then NO hot water


Atwood uses a preset 140*F t-stat........a optional 120*F t-stat and an adjustable 110*F t0 150*F t-stat are available

Suburban uses a preset 130*F t-stat.....a optional 140*F t-stat available (discontinued the 120*F one)



Beats heating water on stove and taking 'PTA' baths

I went from a gallon to a 10. The 10 is much better. I never run out now that I have a 10 gallon heater. Keep in mind we don't conserve or take Navy showers.
When we had a 6 gallon heater, more than once I would cut it short because I felt the water cooling off as the hot water ran out.
A 6 gallon heater is not a total deal breaker but I would avoid a 6 gallon heater in the future

The key with oxygenics is not turning the water on full blast. It'll still spray good with very little water.

I just accept the fact that I'm camping and that requires some compromises, one of which is the fact that unlimited length showers are out.

I did install an oxygenics shower head, but I cant say that I noticed a big difference in either how long the hot water tank lasts. I have also not been blown away (see what I did there?) with the water pressure from it compared to the one it replaced.

I would not let the idea of a 6 gal cap. hot water tank hold me back from purchasing the TT that you like and it was the only drawback. :@

Had much better luck since switching to a water saving shower head...and I actually like this one. I think it's just about doubled my shower time, compared to to the oem.

While we get by, I don't believe the 6gal heaters work any better than they used too, especially if you are used to 10gal.

I see a lot of 6cu ft refrigerators, which are too small.

Our gas or electric water heater is non adjustable and way too hot. I turn it on till it heats up and then turn it off till we use up the hot water.

It is a 6 gallon unit and I have been told that for quick recovery you can used both the gas and electric. I have never tried that.

Just run both heat sources when in use. No problem

I have always had 6 gallon water heaters but I always modified them . Being a plumber it was easy. I changed the thermostats to heat the water to 140 degrees and installed a thermostatic mixing valve at the back of the water tank to mix in cold water set at 110 degrees which this set up gives me 10 gallons of hot water
