This come as a choker to me. I was not aware that the key that open your outside storage compartment of my T.T. is a universal key. CH-751, why even bother locking this compartment if anyone else can walk around and open it with their own key. Ok maybe I am over paranoid ...This is sad:M

Hi,

The locks prevent the turnbuckles from vibrating to the open position.

Guys, most trailers are 1x1 wood framing with some aluminum sheet covering it, or maybe a aluminum frame with filon, Battery powered sawzall, nail eater blade, I'm just sayin......as an aside, I needed a key for my boat with a Mercury outboard, the parts guy asked, does it have an a, b, or c, that's your 3 choices...
Here's a picture of me using a sawzall to make "helmet awards" for the 4 year players on my son's high school football team, I cut through the facemasks just fine......

I like it. Gotta remember my keys next time I go to an RV show:)

I changed out the ch751 locks not because of security, but because the keys are flimsy zinc/brass construction and tend to break. Amazon has "automotive grade camlocks" which are generic double-sided locks that have a shutter to keep out dirt. These have worked reasonably well.

I found a place, lsidepot.com, that has Medeco and Abloy cam locks for $20-$25 each. I might go this route, not because the locks will be more secure, but because they will still be working a long time from now, and they can come with dust caps.

I pick locks as a hobby. I can pick a flat key cam lock in 4-5 minutes, sometimes faster, sometimes longer if it's corroded.

I have a round (Ace or barrel) lock pick and can pick those in less than 30 seconds.

You would need a Medeco or Abbloy cam lock to approach being pick proof.

I upgraded to tubular cam locks on a previous TT. Bought them from Industrial Lock and Hardware There are different cam lengths, offsets and hole diameters that you need to know before ordering. Excellent service. They called me in the evening on the same day I ordered them to confirm I had the right specs. I removed them before selling our TT and kept them. Available for someone if interested. Our new TT came with slam latches.

Cam style locks have been used on compartment doors in Canada Post community mail boxes for years. Mail theft has been rampant for years because they've been so easy to pry open. They've recently finally replaced the entire mail boxes with ones with waaay better locks. I never understood why they used the same easy to break into cam locks like on an RV. Our box got broken into many times and we had to make sure we picked up our mail daily.

Forget about security with those small locks, no matter what the key number. Mine was broken into in storage. They used a screwdriver or something similar and simply pryed the doors. No damage to the doors. Only a very small black mark on the frame where they pried. The tabs on the locks were bent at about 45 degree angle. I pressed on the tab with my thumb and bent it back in shape with very little force.
Not likely anyone intent on theft is going to worry about carrying the right key.

The ch751 is not a universal key. A universal key is the screwdriver a thief can open the door with faster than you can use the key.

They aren't for security, they are to keep the door closed.

Put any lock cylinder you want in there, the screwdriver is still faster.

I'm betting I could open 99% of compartments in under 10 seconds with a small crowbar if I was so inclined and didn't care about the damage.

Locks are for keeping honest people honest. I'd rather have them unlock the door than rip it out and do far more damage than the stuff inside is worth.

You could probably use a 2" hole saw on a cordless drill and remove the lock on a cargo door in 30 second also.
