Mileage of 6.4 Hemi

I noticed a recent post on mileage of 3/4 ton gas trucks. My truck is a DRW 1 ton CC LB 4x4 6.4 Hemi with 3:73 years. Just returned from a 500 mile trip pulling a 9k 5er and we got 8.9 mpg. I stayed between 62-65 mph. I would think the 3/4 tons would be close to the same. I am very happy with this truck and think the mpg is pretty good. Hope this helps some who are thinking of getting a gas tow vehicle.

I thought running premium in my 6.4 would allow it to keep up with diesels. I haven't had a chance to try that though.

Let me know when your ready! :W

LOL, Since we're around 2,000 miles apart I'm going to concede and give you the win.

Thanks. For some reason I thought they recommended premium, upon further review I was mistaken.

In the research stage of a new truck, all options on the table so far.

Premium fuel does NOT improve fuel economy for vehicles that do not normally require it.

I'm running straight 87 in mine even when towing. I ran 89 while towing in the 100° heat and I didn't find a difference in pulling power. All the power was still there. But then again, I'm not all that heavy. Maybe if I was near max and towing in the heat then I would see a difference.

Empty I'm getting around 17 MPG on straight highway tanks. Mixed driving I normally end up somewhere around 15.6 MPG. Towing is typical and somewhere in the 9's for me. Best I've done was 10.3 and the worst was 6.5.

Do you guys run premium fuel when towing? Or all the time?

I always ran 87. I did try 89 but couldn't see any mpg difference, and couldn't feel any performance difference even when towing.

If I were to tow in really hot weather, I might run 89 but never needed to.

the Manuel recomends mid grade but goes on to say 87 octane is fine. With 25k miles I have always run 87.

Thank you for the feedback! The 6.4 is on my list for my next truck. I prefer a dually for towing too.

What kind of empty MPG could I expect with the 6.4 Hemi and the DRW?

My V10 F350 CC Dually got about 9.5 empty. Just to add perspective.

Thanks!

Jeremiah
I have got 16 on the highway but average 14.5 all around with 3:73 gears.

They're pretty rare. I ordered mine because I knew they were hard to find and I wanted built a certain way. It only took about 6 weeks to get to me which isn't bad.
