Hello to everyone. We are now an empty nest couple with plans of Truck Camping. I have just traded for a well kept 1998 F-150 long bed truck with overloads that includes a 1976 Huntsman camper, also in very good condition. We are looking forward to some short trips before we commit to a long road trip. I am accustomed to tent camping, so it shouldn't be much of a stretch to TC. The wife is looking forward to some new scenery. I don't anticipate problems driving this rig, as I have driven emergency vehicles for thirty years. Please, anyone feel free to offer any tips or advice.

On the inspection plate on the camper says 1600 lb dry weight. I will post some pictures as soon as I can get time. I have been busy training with our technical rescue team. We have 2 classes and one exercise every week, 48 weeks of the year. This time of year we are actually on Paintsville Lake almost every day for safety and EMS. Not to mention our other responsibilities.

Jeff, welcome to the truck camper forum.

Though I know nothing about the 1976 Huntsman camper you mention, you might want to check and see that your truck is capable of carrying it. All but the lightest of truck campers exceed the allowable payload of most 150/1500 pickups. Many overloaded pickups are carrying campers that are much heavier than their allowable payload. And many drivers will swear that this is not a problem. But we on the forum would be remiss if we did not alert you to this possibility.

welcome to the board Chief. Check the tires, you want E rated with the highest weight rating that will fit on the rims. The more plys to the sidewall = less sway. If the shocks are old swap em out for something newer and heavy duty. The rigs handle like an engine with a 2/3 full load of water.

I just retired in Dec from Santa Cruz County Fire.
