Onan Model 2.5 KVD Generator Maintenance FYI

While doing a bit of maintenance on the generator I pull the front door to get to the air filter. The filter was full of large chunks of the sound deadening material from the maintenance access door.

The door had an approximate 1/4" thick piece of open cell foam with an outside plastic skin for sound deadening. It's an '05 model with only 153 hours on it.

Not sure if Onan is still using this material on newer models but you probably should check it since it's in an engine compartment and subject to extreme temps and oil.

The foam had turned to a sticky mess. All the loose pieces had created a mess where they had landed including the air filter. Scrapped it off with a putty knife and removed the adhesive with mineral spirits.

Same thing that happened to the foam backed headliners in cars. You would think they would have learned what foam to use.

Will pick up some good automotive foil backed sound deadening tomorrow.
