Most campers have full rear walls and there is no room for the tailgate cables

Before you load the camper? The tailgate doesn't offer much, if any, support to the part of the camper that overhangs, so generally it's removed before loading the camper. No need to carry the added weight.

But it's only really 'necessary' to remove it if the camper you're carrying requires removal for the camper to fit on the bed.
