Planning summer trip - looking for suggestions

Planning summer trip with 6 & 9 year old. What are some of the best areas and campgrounds for kids you could recommend on the east coast from DC to FL. Any help and suggestions appreciated.

I have two 9 year olds and they LOVE Hunting Island! Mom's and Dad's do too! You really want to get on one of the two beach loops. If you're in the back, it can still be okay, but bugs are terrible! In the beach loops, the breeze is enough to keep them manageable.

Nobody has mentioned this yet but since you have a 6 and 9 year old... You have to check out Walt Disney's Fort Wilderness.

I'm sure you will get lots of other ideas as well.

Depending on what you want to do in the Washington, D.C. Area you have 2 options for sight seeing. Cherry hill park is off 495 and near college park Maryland and is within driving to a metro station, the other is a small regional park that takes trailers, little Bennett regional park. It's small and quiet, 15 minute drive to the shady grove metro station or red line to downtown d.c. If your into civil war history Greenbriar state park, Cunningham falls state park are a few. Harpers ferry has a koa and Gettysburg has several as well.. We use Greenbriar yearly. Good access to the Appalachian trail and Antietam battlefield/harpers ferry area. We like to paddle and fish and love these two spots

Also St. Augustine, FL is nice with State Park camping across hwy from beach.

If the kids are boys, be sure to go to Patriots Point in Charleston and let them spend the day climbing ladders and checking out the aircraft carrier, submarine, and destroyer (I think).

Any kids will be amazed at the deer that walk through your campsite at Hunting Island.

Destin is a great place, but a long ways from the East Coast. I would not try it, unless you have lots and lots of time.

'Full Hook-up' facility.

Outer Banks of NC. Just start at the top and end up in Ocracoke, take the ferry from there back to the mainland, and keep heading South.

We have 2 DDs, aged 9 and 6. We made our reservations at Hunting Island a couple of weeks ago and will be there the week of July 17 - 26th. Myrtle Beach is just way too busy and populated for me.

We LOVE the DC area for it's FREE stuff. The Smithsonian, zoo, monuments, etc. are free, well, not really. We have already paid for them in our taxes.

We have spent spring break there several years and the girls like riding the Metro and going from monument to monument and it has helped them in school. They have pictures of themselves at the monuments and we talk about why they were built.

If I were planning a camping trip to the area, I would book Cherry Hill and then ride in and out of the city on the Metro. Stay there for 4-5 days, then go on to the Eastern Shore to camp at the ocean for a few days. If you can coincide with the running of the horses at Assateague, that would be marvelous.

X2 on Hunting Island. Check out the State parks in Florida. Tamoka and Silver river have great canoeing.
