Propane tank pigtail hose connector?

I have a new to me 2016 Arctic Fox 25Y that I have only been able to get out a couple of times. The first time was only for two days, and I filled the propane tanks (30lb) before we left, and everything worked fine. The next time was a month later, and in the precheck the tanks were empty. We did not use much propane on the first trip. I had put in a line from the stove gas line to run a catalytic heater. So I checked the connections, and there was a very slight leak, so I tightened it and everything was fine. Filled the tanks again. When I got back, I shut off the tanks and everything inside was turned off. We are going up to the lake, and when I turned on the refrigerator, it kept going out, and it was slow getting the stove top to light, so the lines were empty. On checking, I found that there was a pretty good leak in both of the pigtails where they screw onto the tank where they attach to the hose. The question with this long dissertation, is, does this happen often, and can it be fixed, or just replaced? How do you prevent it? I commend any that read the hole thing. Thank you.

I had to replace a leaking pigtail on my Keystone that was only 4 years old.My son has my old Coleman popup and has the original pigtail that is 25 years old. Look at how much of the new campers are made in China.

Cavagna brand hoses seem to have a superior crimp to me. Yes I agree many seem weak.

Also look to see if the tank cover is bending the hoses too severely when it is put on. I had a problem with that on a previous camper.

Hi,
Thanks for the answers. The tanks were empty, they took the 7 gal. They are leaking at the crimp. I have never had a problem with the hoses in over 50 years of camping with many rigs of different kinds. They just don't make things like they used to. I have to get two new ones, but can't until after the holiday. I will have to put them on before I leave tomorrow morning. I had a gauge on my tanks in my old Alpenlite that was really nice to see how much was left. Flying blind with this one. Will have to try something else. Thanks again.

Sounds like his hoses are leaking between the hose and hose barbs where they are crimped with either a metal ring or a sleeve. I've had lots of problems with the crimps on the pigtails replacing the hoses several times. I finally had a local industrial hose supplier make some hoses for me with proper crimps to my specifications.

If the cylinders were off and you lost propane then it has to be the tanks.

BTW do you have an automatic regulator that switches between cylinders? The indicator should tell when the primary cylinder is empty. This way you fill one at a time and never run out.

Other possibility is you triggered the safety valve by opening the hand valve too fast. Were the cylinders actually empty when you went to fill them? 30lb should take about 7 gallons to fill.

I replaced mine, also be advised that there is a yellow thread tape made for LP gas.
I bought my tape from Lowes.

I replaced a pigtail, about 18-20.00.... then found out when I took the tank to the LP place, it was the gauge (?) on the tank which was bad. The cost to fix that was about the same as buying a new tank. He tested the valve on the tank with the pink LP stuff (I have used just soapy water..) and it was bubbling bad. So, might want to test that valve first (with the pigtail disconnected) before you buy a new pigtail?
