Recalling of millions of passenger airbags

Automakers to recall air bags in humid parts of U.S.
Faulty air bags โ€” which have already led to the recall of millions of cars worldwide โ€” are blamed for a new round of recalls in the U.S.
AP WireDetroitJun 24, 2014The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the government's auto safety agency, said Monday that BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Nissan and Toyota will recall cars sold in places where hot, humid weather can potentially affect the air bags.

The older-model cars have air bag inflators that can rupture. If that happens, the air bags might not work properly in a crash, and shards from the broken system could fly out and cause injury.

The automakers all have air bag systems made by Takata Corp., a Tokyo-based supplier of seat belts, air bags, steering wheels and other auto parts.

NHTSA opened an investigation this month after getting six reports of air bags rupturing in Florida and Puerto Rico. Three people were injured in those cases. It had estimated 1.1 million vehicles automakers in the U.S. could be affected, but the total is likely to climb.

Honda, for example, said it will include 10 states and territories in its recall, including Texas, Georgia and South Carolina. Honda says Takata recommended recalling cars in four places: Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The government says it wanted to act quickly in warm states while it continues to investigate the issue.

"Based on the limited data available at this time, NHTSA supports efforts by automakers to address the immediate risk in areas that have consistently hot, humid conditions over extended periods of time," the agency said in a statement.

Honda says too much pressure may be building up in the system, causing the air bags to deploy with too much force.

In one complaint last August, a Honda driver's lawyer told NHTSA that the car was in a crash, and both driver and passenger air bags inflated. The driver's air bag inflator ruptured "and propelled a one-inch piece of shrapnel into the driver's right eye." The driver lost sight and suffered cuts requiring 100 stitches to close, the complaint said.

Takata's air bags have been the subject of multiple recalls in recent months.

In April 2013, Toyota, Honda and Nissan recalled nearly 3.4 million older-model vehicles worldwide due to a problem with the propellant in the air bags that could lead to fires.

But Takata recently realized that recall didn't include all of the potentially faulty air bags. Earlier this month, Toyota recalled 2.27 million more cars globally. And on Monday in Japan, Honda, Mazda and Nissan together recalled nearly 3 million more.

The worst happens to us up here. Numerous recalls happen making big news and when we go into a dealership we get the company line, "Oh that recall doesnt apply to Canada." despite the fact they are the same vehicles with the same parts made in the same factory as the US model. Maybe we aren't humid enough up here ;-). Has happened to us with Japanese, Euro and NA vehicles. In most cases they come around to it up to a year later and in some cases reimbursed owners who paid for the repair to avoid that whole "am I driving a ticking bomb?" feeling. But not everytime.

Hey Perry Don Boy, at least GM hadn't been facing bankruptcy twice like Chrysler Corp has since 1979s and was not sold even once but Chrysler was 3 TIMES so far. Now a foreign owner again who makes and has made all their HD pickup trucks in Mexico for so many years and so many of the engines there also which are in them and then are IMPORTED into the USA and Canada to sell with the profits going to Italy. Wanna talk about it?

You work for Chrysler/Fiat of Italy and are extremely biased and want to constantly protect your job but I have never been employed by any automotive manufacturer nor do I get one dime of income or pensions or anything from any automotive manufacturer so I wouldn't need to protect my "job" and I'm long retired and can tell the real facts and truths. Live with it!

If you don't like my truthful threads or posts just don't read them and move on like a real adult usually would.

Back to what this thread is about and why it was started:

This thread is to inform the owners of the listed vehicle manufacturers recall for bad and failing air bags which is a REQUIRED safety component.

I thought that as well. Plus, how do they know who travels to these locations from a non "humid" area.

Watch him worm and squirm to try to debunk my statement as it's been well known for all these years but Chrysler Corp assets and control was and is foreign owned and actually in corporate financial stress and then bankrupt which gave them some shield but no longer as the heat has been turned up now and watch what's going to happen. Gonna be fun, ya think?! Hey, Perryboy, gee whiz, I wonder who really lives in a cracked glass house???

I didn't write the article but I sure noticed that you surely didn't post a thread to warn owners of these dangerous vehicles! Is it because Chrysler Corp was mentioned as having bad airbags? Naaa, you'd never do that would you???

Think twice before you make your very snide childish posts criticizing my statements or posts or threads. Thank you!

Nutz what part of "on vacation" don't you comprehend. BTW Chrysler has had recalls on our air bags. GM tried to hide them and if you want to talk about bankruptcy GM was their at the same time.

Now with GM having so many recalls that we can't even keep track of them and the fact that they suspended ALL sales of the 2013 and 2014 Cruz do to air bags issues and the up coming fine we will see how long it is until they are back in front of a bankruptcy Judge. "Gonna be fun, ya think?!" who is posting "very snide childish posts criticizing my statements or posts or threads" Keep post stupid stuf like that Nutz, it proves who the child is.

Link to story about Chevy Cruze sales The stop-sale order was lifted late Wednesday after the specific vehicles were identified. GM is working on a likely recall of those cars, according to a person familiar with the process who spoke on the condition of anonymity, Bloomberg reported. Now it's 33,000 vehicles on hold or to be recalled

With the mass production and out sourcing...any vehicle OEM will (not maybe) a
recall sooner or later...except for those with blind loyalty...

Here is the latest on Ford's recall:

Pickuptrucks.com 2014 Ford F-150

Again, *ALL* vehicle OEMs do and will have recalls...whether in house
or supplier makes no difference, does it?

Sorry but I'm not 100% brand loyal, really! I both my #1 DD a 2001 Volvo S-80 and have regretted buying it do to the poor built quality of this vehicle. To be fair the 2000 Dodge Stratus (bought @ a repo auction) turn out to be a money pit also.

DD #2 was bought a 2001 Buick Century, again a total POS. Nutz loves to talk about Chrysler products rusting out well both rocker panels rutted out and is the norm on ALL Buick's. It also needed the trans replaced, two hubs ABS system repaired and a water pump all with in one year of ownership!

So yep they ALL have their issues as they are machines, that if not taken care of WILL cost you lots and lots of money.

I was not going to post on this thread until I got to your comment,

had you left that out I would have been content to just read TNutz's post and laughing. Talked about a Fan boy, I don't come close to his "Brand Loyalty".

BTW I'm on Vacation and have been working on relandscaping the front yard. And frankly the way I got slammed the last time I posted about a GM recall I won't be starting any new recall threads, at least not about GM's.

Agree 'somewhat' with Les, but there is a disassociation in the process...

Here is what I mean...the ones making the decisions 'up front' many times do NOT
suffer the consequences for their actions/decisions

Too often, the service division gets the bill for these recalls and/or warranty costs

The up front decision makers are long gone either on another project and/or
in different jobs (inside that corp or another corp). Got their 'Attaboy' bonuses
and raises

A well run product design team will have reps from the service group(s). Not so well
run will have management ignore them...knowing that they most likely will NOT
ever suffer the consequences.

The current GM fiasco is a prime example of that and the current CEO is cleaning
house so that this won't happen again. Time will tell, as that good ol boy way
of running a corporation is ingrained...

Until upper management demands and dictates that those up front decision
makers also suffer the consequences for their decisions will this
end...better or more correctly...lessen this

I'll take that philosophy even farther...to here on this forum.

Too many won't want to hear it and only want to hear what they want to hear...

Funny though Nutz forgot to include GM's four air bag recalls. Also this "April 29, 2014 - 2:49 pm ET DETROIT -- GM was reluctant to recall 1.2 million vehicles for airbag issue. Even after revealing that it waited years to recall cars in which faulty ignition switches caused airbags to fail, a General Motors document suggests the automaker last month remained reluctant to issue a recall for a long-known problem with airbags on more than 1 million other vehicles. Instead, GM on March 13 approved a less-urgent customer-satisfaction campaign -- which is not monitored by government regulators and typically less costly to automakers -- to address an airbag flaw affecting the GMC Acadia, Chevrolet Traverse, Buick Enclave and Saturn Outlook crossovers." LINKY LINKY they just don't get it do they. Maybe the record fine coming down the pike might do something to wake them up.

People in glass houses there Nutz.

Don

Don...this is exactly what I'm talking about.

Brand loyalty.

I've mentioned before ...ALL COMPANIES....are affected by recalls. Many use the same suppliers....so many parts are the same...with the same good and bad designs.

I've....and/or my family members have had GM, Ford, Mopar, Toyota, Nissan, VW, Volvo, etc....and they all have issues....all have had recall...all have had lemons in their respective vehicle lines.

In my humble opinion and observation...all manufacturers ...pretty almost without exception...try to avoid recalls because of the great expense.

It's the business part that looks at how the most profit an be made per unit, and the balancing act between profit per unit, vs cost per unit.

Compromises are made, decisions are made and sometimes those compromises and decisions are in error.

Every manufacturer, whether they make widgets or warplanes is subject to these factors.

Without exception.

These latest airbag recalls affect significantly older vehicles from a lot of different manufacturers. My question, why just the huge recalls as of late?

The answer my friend, I believe is in the earlier part of my response.

I've probably been around longer than most....I'm no spring chicken (mid-60's)...and I understand the Bench racing aspect of Ford Vs Chevy...and other rivalries.

When I was a young man I had a '67 Camaro...one of my closest friends had a high performance 289, '66 Mustang.

I recall the motorcycle wars of the 1960's....Triumph/ Norton
vs Harley. I was a Norton motorcycle guy.

In the '40's it was HD vs Indian motorcycles.

It used to be fun back in the muscle car and muscle bike, days of the 1960's.

But now it seems, there are a few (not all) who just sit in wait to stir up animosity and then sit back and enjoy the senseless recriminations thrown back and forth.

It's a waste of effort on everyone's part, including me and when you think about it......a Ford, Chevy, Dodge, etc...are just machines.

When it comes to current pickups, I would say without any doubt....they're all good and there's little to choose between them......except whatever happens to be the consumer's favourite
brand.

The other thing I know.....and you do too...is that every brand in the future will have a design/ part issue and as a result there will be a recall.

Les
