resale value

When I purchased my '11 Ford back in 2010, it had a msrp of $84000. The Canadian selling price was $70k. About 1 year earlier we bought a nicely equipped GMC cc Duramax 4x4 with leather for 52k. I was looking at the asking price to try to determine the fair market value of these two trucks. It looks to me like the relatively plain, year older Chevy with 65k miles should sell for 38k and the absolutely loaded Ford with 50k miles would only bring 43k. Is this typical in other areas?

The 2010 GMC was purchased in February of 2010. The list price was very close to $66400 and it was purchased without a trade in. The 2011 Ford was priced out in November of 2010. List was $84,000.

How do we know how good a deal the OP really got. What time of year was it purchased, rebates, negotiating effectiveness at the different dealers, etc. Add to the fact, giving the very different prices for the two vehicles puts them into two distinct markets.

It could be the 6.7 needs more time to prove itself although people are sure not afraid to purchase them new. I wonder if the fact that their are more Fords on the market than Ram or GM makes any difference? One other factor might be that people who buy used, as a rule, may be less interested in all the options. The option packages might depreciate at a much higher rate than the base truck?

Not really... Here Super Duty's command a fairly high resale value including one's with high mileage. One the reasons I purchased a used RAM 5.9 last year for a song! :B

Looks like the GMC was not as bad of an investment as the Ford!

You mean better depreciating asset. If you see losing 14K in value a good investment, you should get a job with Lehmans brothers.

The Duramax trucks hold their value very well, that's part of it. The other part is Ford's 6.0/6.4 diesels were bad and it killed their resale. The 6.7 appears to be a much better engine, but it will take some time for that improvement to be reflected in its resale value.
