We stayed at Skidaway Island last fall. GREAT park, natural setting, many full hook ups. EASY drive to Savannah. We did pass the campground on Tybee Island (River's End) and didn't care for it. Sites packed together like sardines. Check out Google Map's streetview and you'll see what I mean. Although very close to the Tybee Island beach and lighthouse, it's not our style and further away than Skidaway to Savannah old town.

I stayed at Fort McAllister State Park in Richmond Hill, a Savannah suburb. Loved it... beautuful. But like most State Parks, there's no sewer hook up and for wifi, you'll need to tether your phone.

In Savannah, we usually stay at River's end Campground on Tybee Island. I would recommend taking the trolley ride first off to get your bearing and scope-out things you'd like to go back and see. If you like seafood, we like AJ's Dock-side on Tybee, and The Oyster House on Wilmington Island, the first traffic light when coming off of Tybee Island. These are both mostly locals places and not real touristy. The light-house on Tybee is worth a walk-up for the view. Also it's kinda fun to watch the big ships come-up the Savannah River.

Thank You Bob we will have to check it out.

In Savannah we usually camp at Rivers End Campground on Tybee Island. I would recommend starting out with the trolley tour, so you can get your bearings and scope-out what you want to see. I bet it's about the same in Charleston although I've not been there yet.

We just returned from a camping trip to both cities. While camping at Hunting Island State Park in SC we took a day trip to Savannah. It was rainy but we walked around the waterfront area, visited small shops, got a bite to eat and just enjoyed the area. We rode out to Wormsloe Historic Site which was very pretty and worth the ride. We did not pay to go onto the grounds, just took some pictures of the road lined with 400 live oak trees.

We changed campgrounds mid-week to Edisto Beach State Park and went into Charleston for a day as well. You have already gotten some great suggestions for Charleston, one activity not mentioned and something we did and enjoyed immensely was taking a cruise on "Fate" a charter sailboat that leaves from the City docks. After spending the day walking around the Battery and Market area it was great to board the boat and sail around the entire peninsula seeing the city from the water. We sailed under the Ravenel bridge, past the old fort in the harbor, Fort Sumter and just about into the ocean, this was everyone's favorite activity of the entire week. Great crew, beautiful boat and a unique experience!

Thank you I will check out that sailing experience. It sounds wonderful. We love to sail and have been on a few charter sails here in Ft. Myers area.

Regarding Savannah: We enjoyed camping at Skidaway Island. Beautiful, quiet, and handy. We took and enjoyed one of the trolley tours, which included Forsythe Park. I recommend eating at the Pirate House. Good, reasonably priced lunch buffet of Southern cooking and interesting history. Tybee Island was also nice, but if you've been doing lots of beaches in Florida, it may not be a big deal.

One place to go in Charleston is the downtown flea market. Even if that's not your type of thing, it's a great place to spend an hour or so. Plus, it's close to restaurants.

The AAA handbook for the Carolinas list the interesting places to see, including the "Gems", except campgrounds of course.
Would love to visit there again. We specially enjoyed the respect for history
and architecture.
