I understand that crime can happen anywhere, even in a high end gated community. All I am saying is that our odds of living crime free go way up by carefully choosing where we live, play and store our things.
I know that sometimes "the ghetto moves to where we are". That was effectively what happened where I was growing up....which is why I moved out. I have a brother that to this day refuses to move out of the old 'hood. Last winter some lowlifes broke into his basement garage and stole his snow blower. My comment to him was that it's way past time to move out to a better place. It was 39 years ago that I left the 'hood.

I'm in a place now with my camper for the winter. Yesterday, I needed to go get a propane tank filled, off property. I also wanted to go to a hiking trail while out, but decided leaving the propane tank unattended in the back of the truck was an invitation to theft. Instead I brought it back here, and made a separate trip to the hiking trail. And that's all I'm saying guys, that being aware of where we are will give us some pretty good hints as to how likely or unlikely we may be victimized.

Sorry to here you all are suffering losses of gear. This stuff ain't cheap, and it's a pain in the arse to have to replace things just because there are bums out there that decide it's easier to take from others rather than earn. For sure though this is nothing new. They have been highway robbers, and stagecoach thieves, etc, since the beginning of time.

GMW PHOTOS,

I agree with you, totally. It is important to always be aware of your surroundings and react accordingly. Your safety and your family's safety is your responsibility. That also goes for your property. Be aware, be alert and be cautious, BUT enjoy life. Good camping to all.

Here in Austin, it isn't moving to the ghetto; the 'hood is moving into Austin. This is why I want none of this, and store my rig so far outside the city limits. Even with precautions, I still get attempts at stealing my truck's tailgate. I recommend the Master Lock, but the McGard one I have (which is essentially a glorified hose clamp wrapped in plastic and using a funky screw head) has kept my tailgate on my truck. I also learned to not bother locking the tailgate handle -- a good hit with a long screwdriver will snap the handle lock open.

Of course, I've even had bags of camp waste including bagged poop stolen from the bed of my truck before.

Not to sound like an ass, but I'm thinking you guys need to rethink where you camp, store, and park.
I grew up in the ghetto, and learned early on, the best cure is prevention, and in this case, it means staying away from areas where I am most likely to encounter this kind of nonsense. Having grown up there, and knowing a lot of these guys, I can recognize the signs instantly in the people and places I go.

Eh, even very nice campgrounds have lowlifes and dumb teenagers.

In seventh grade, my friends and I vandalized a neighbor's Christmas lights as a joke. It's not something I'm proud of, but we did it, and we lived in an upper middle class neighborhood in the suburbs.

No place is immune to crime.

FYI...the neighbor found out we did it, told my mom, and she made me apologize, offer to do work for them to pay off my "debt," and made sure I never did anything like that again. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I store my TT well away from Austin for this exact reason. The city is growing, and crime has gone up 20% in a year in some parts. If I had a RV storage place that was so bad that I had to bother with some type of lock for power cords, I'd move it further out, as life is too short for worrying about that.

I do also. I store my trailer at a gated facility in Round Rock that has cameras and security. I still have my battery box and propane tanks secured in place with chains and padlocks. I had an attempted battery theft one night while overnighting in a truck stop. Also, when I'm in storage, I store the 30A cord and use an adapter and a Home Depot extension cord, since all I really use is the converter to keep the battery charged and I could really even do without that. I live in Austin and have had several vehicle break-ins in my Condo complex, the latest being the theft of a tailgate off my 2013 Super Duty, so you can tell my sense of humor about this is growing a little thin. If I ever catch anyone stealing from me, it's going to get very noisy, and hopefully I'll be able to see my phone to dial 911 after the smoke clears.

Friends of ours took their brand new trailer home. Someone cut it off flush the first night in their yard.

I ended up having to take my power cord from a pull out stand point to one that is removable. Now I store it inside the trailer but you all are making me more aware that perhaps that should be at home with me and stored in the "camping go-box". Hmmmm

While I would not necessarily go to the extreme of using deadly force to stop the little darlings from swiping my cord, it could be kind of fun to rig up some "trip wires" made from fishing line or similar, and then sit back in the shadows and watch the show.
I also bought one of those "stun gun" flashlights that would sure be fun to play with. I've pointed it at the dog, but she just looked at me with that look of, "don't even think about it, human"

You may want to rethink the glock use. I'd really be pissed if they stole my cord, I shot at them, and I went to jail.

x2. A new cord and labor to replace the ripped out wires is a lot cheaper than hiring a defense attorney for a quad murder case.

Don't forget the press who will side with the "poor, defenseless, misunderstood property liberators who are just looking for something to pay for their next meal or another day's rent."

I don't blame one for defending their property, but even here in Texas, having to front up a $500 deductible for damage done is a lot cheaper than having to deal with the criminal and civil fallout from a firefight.

RV stored in any lot is an invitation to thieves.

IF you can't afford to replace it......don't leave it in the RV. Period.
Locked inside, locked compartments etc. are not a cure.

Sure... but leaving stuff sitting out is just asking for trouble. We all know that windows can be smashed, or doors can be pried open... but a walk-by theft is reduced by locking things away.

Who leaves stuff sitting out in an RV Storage Lot :H

I meant propane tanks, batteries, spring bars, ect... stuff often left outside of a locked trailer.

You're right, bring it home, but it is still better out of sight in a locked trailer then just sitting outside of it.

One day sitting outside my trailer, i heard a slight noise on the other side of my RV, investigating i found someone taking my step ladder, he stated he wanted to borrow it for a few minutes to repair his trailers"s awning. He was right, but he should have asked first.

That'll be the day!!! If he didn't ask first then NO LADDER !!

As a child, I lived on a lake. We had a very nice dock out front. Many fisherman knocked on the door and asked for permission to fish off the dock. They were allowed and welcome.

Those that fished there, without asking first, were kicked off our private property ASAP!

Lesson learned: Ask first. So many times campgrounds have "bent" the rules for our three dogs, just because we asked first!

We also have with us two rescue dogs. A Chihuahua mix & a Catahoula mix.
