ST trailer tire 75 mph rated

For those who prefer to tow a little faster than 65 mph, as well as for those who would like some extra cushion in their tires' speed rating, I recently learned that Hercules ST tires are rated for 75 mph. Just wanted to let folks know about this additional option. I am getting one put on my cargo trailer next week (they had to order it from the warehouse, the store didn't stock it).

I have read the government test standards for ST and LT. Yes, the LTs undergo far more rigorous tests that STs. That is because LTs are designed for trucks and the stresses associated with truck service. ST tires are tested for the stresses associated with trailer service.

If you wish to believe the more rigorous LT testing makes them suitable for trailer service and the LT manufacturers are stupid for not recommending they be used for trailer service, go right ahead.

I would add that Indy racing tires also undergo severe stress and testing, so why don't we all switch to them?

My thoughts and feelings as well...

It is not driving 75 mph, it is the stopping.

I wonder what speed the TTs are designed for given the standard tires are rated for 65 mph.

I hope the higher speed rated ST tires prove themselves. I would be interested in LT tires if they were made in 15" LR E sizes.

My opinion of donut tires is they are a result of two things. One, a real desire by the OEM's to save weight, and two, the overall reliability of passenger tires is so good these days that most people will never even need to use the spare. So it makes sense to provide a limited use ( speed and distance ) spare.
My trucks both have full size spares, but of course all the family cars have donuts.

Why the big name tire companies , Michelin , firestone ,yokahama ,etc dont make ST tires ?( goodyear does but they sub it out )

Many of those same brands also don't make specialty tires either.

With all the cars and trucks on the road why dont you see towmaster and hercules tires with a passanger car or truck tire line .

You mean like these:
Hercules tires
TowMax parent company
WestLake tires

Why are ST tires speed limited at 65 mph when there are roads in the US with higher speed limits ?

Some are. The WestLakes on my trailer say 75 MPH.

Why is the donut tire in your vehicle limited to 60?

Some of the big guys make specialty tires

I dont have a donut tire in my Ford excursion .

Sprinkler Man, you make good points. I have to wonder sometimes about the typical American consumer. Some of this is what I call, "the walmart-i-zation" of America. People buy things based first and foremost on retail price point, so we now have an entire generation that does not understand the difference between price and value.
We end up with a lot of folks buying the cheapest tires they can, then either defending it to the death, or complaining when it fails.

Sometimes, you really do "get what you pay for". But hey, if the ST defenders want to buy those products, I say, have at it. It's their dollars to spend any way they choose. But don't make up non-fact based arguments to support the point. Say it like it is: it was cheap, I am happy with it, it works for me, but others may need something more.

There is big money in tires . Companies want profit . NOW I am wondering .

Why the big name tire companies , Michelin , firestone ,yokahama ,etc dont make ST tires ?( goodyear does but they sub it out )

Why are most of the ST tires made overseas by companies you havent heard of ?

With all the cars and trucks on the road why dont you see towmaster and hercules tires with a passanger car or truck tire line .

When ST tires are marked " trailer use only " or "not for passanger use " Why arent they good enough for a car or truck ?

Why are ST tires speed limited at 65 mph when there are roads in the US with higher speed limits ?

The "LT" crowd should be along shortly to get the thread closed..
Paint me with the "LT crowd" brush.
It is kind of funny though, as for such a strong LT believer, I have owned many more sets of ST tires than LT tires. I once was a strong believer in what I now recognize was marketing hype, designed to get my money. Failure after failure, I accepted that there was something that I was doing wrong to my ST tires to cause them to fail at such a horrendous rate. So I upgraded sizes and weight ratings numerous times, until I just ran out of options to go higher. In 2006 my last ST tire failed. On I-17 going north from phoenix in July. It was about 115 degrees out... So hot that I had to remove the floor mats from the TV to lay on the asphalt to keep from getting burned.
I will never forget how unerving it was with the semis blowing past rocking the TT as I worked on it. My wife walked behind a ways to try to get people to be more courteous by waving them over a lane.
After the ordeal was over, she asked me why after all the money we had spent, that we were still having problems. And what we could do better.. Flat out said, what is the best? Whatever it takes, just do it. I told her about some reading I have been doing about Michelin XPS RIBS in the 16" LT tire... And that it would be a real expensive change as our TT had 5 lug rims, and would need 6 lug rims... Long story short. we did it and have never had a failure since. And we do not "baby" these tires one bit. In fact we do things with them that would have given me nightmares with ST tires.

I now read here and there about some supposedly better ST tires being made..
The Carlise with the new cap.... Well they already made all the money they ever will off of me.
This Hercules in this thread.. Never heard of them.
Maxxis has a good reputation here on the forum, but if one looks, there have been quite a few failures reported.. And I have no desire to own a tire that has to be ordered.. When I need a tire, I will likely need it NOW to go home on.

So no, I am not here trying to get the ST tire fans thread closed... Maybe some of these new tires will pan out.. It would be nice if it works out that way.. But I will not be a part of the experiment. Been there, done that, and bought too many T shirts.

AND there we "have it".. The race is on! :S

Yes it is. And it is amazing that no amount of Facts, Science, explaining the technology...nothing, even posting technical papers from the tire manufacturers does any good with the "LT crowd" as you call them. They insist that heir anecdotal evidence is stronger than the reality. I prefer to refer to them as the "Flat Earthers"

And their usual argument never holds water. That "ST tires are just a way to get their money". Well if there weren't ST tires they would still be buying SOME KIND of tire from the same manufacturers who build all kinds of tires. So I guess all of the Millions in R&D, Millions spent on Capital equipment to MFG the ST and more to market them is all just...on a WHIM?

Good Grief!
If really want some REAL FACTs. Read the govt. testing standards for LTs versus STs.
That will be a real eye opener, as it is facts. Not marketing propaganda made to look like facts.

To me it's like many things in life: what can I do to improve my odds of success ?
When it comes to tires for my trailer, we know that LT ( or even P ) tires are built and tested to a higher standard. That at least suggests that the likelhood of a better quality product is the result. Which quite likely can be extended to a greater likelihood of success in use.
Good enough way of looking at it for me.

For those buyers who simply want to choose by the lowest retail pricepoint, there are inexpensive tires on the market to fill that need. Go for it.
