My buddy just sent me these on the way to Va. From Ct. Trailer is under one year old.

If you do a search on this Forum there has been more failures on the Maxxis tires than on the NEW Carlisle Radial Trail RH. And there are not a lot of owners running the Maxxis.


I just picked up a set. I will let you know how they do.
They are speed rated to N. Which is 87 mph. They will most likely never see over 65. Truck is really happy at about 63 mph.

I had the Towmax. Just time for new ones. I hemmed and hoed over tire selection because of this board...:)... None of my trailers have been super heavy my old 1995 Prowler 5th wheel was like 6500 loaded, my current one is 7500 loaded. I had Carlisle's on the 5er, they were good to me. Lets see how they do on the Passport.

My opinion is that tires on the "sunny side" when you park your RV are the most likely to blow. We've had two and both were on that side. We now cover our tires, particularly the sunny side tires.

"Also consider that Special Trailer (ST), as well as Light Truck (LT) tires are fully rated for trailer applications. This means ST- and LT-sized tires can carry the full weight rating branded on the sidewalls when used on a trailer.
"However when P-metric or Euro-metric tires are used on a trailer, the load capacity branded on the sidewalls must be reduced by 9%. This means P-metric or Euro-metric tires with a maximum branded load rating of 1,874 lbs. for use on a car is only rated to carry 1,705 lbs. when used on a trailer."

Do LT tires come in sizes an load ranges like I would need without doing modifications - 205/75R15 ?

We have no idea how much wheel well clearance or how much distance your trailer has between the tires or if your trailer needs a C or D load range tire.
Anyways....these are some 15" LT that other RV folks use with great sucess

Goodyear Wrangler HT in a LT235/75-15 C (50 psi) at 1980 lb capacity. Most LT tire makers carry this size.

And a Wrangler HT in a LT215/75-15 D (65 psi) at 2090 lbs capacity.

Maxxis LT U-168 are a commercial grade tire with several 15" sizes and have became popular with all types of trailer owners.

I see the Yokohama RY215 in a 700R 15 D at 2040 lbs capacity is popular on some of the other RV websites.

Do your home work on the numbers for your particular trailer needs.

That tire - 225 is taller than my 205 I think. I don't have wheel well clearance.

OH, the good ole' tire debate... Almost as entertaining as the MPG debate.

Everyone treats their TIRES differently.. Never mind inflation, speed, weight but also outside temps, skidding tires during braking, etc. In my opinion the biggest damage you can do to any tire is the tight U-turn/skidding that you see evidence of at any gas station. I have no clue if an ST tire can handle the side force better than an LT tire and quite honestly do not care. Also not saying that every blow out is due to one factor.

What I will say is that the next time you strap onto that trailer and start cutting tight corners (forward or backwards), take note of how twisted the tires look like in the middle of that corner and think to yourself "I wonder how much hidden damage I'm doing to that tire right now".

just for fun I'd like to state that my truck gets better MPG than your truck too. LOL
