We've had a rolling bed cover for years, and on this last trip the cover split. Second time, and this time I am not going to replace it. But I still need secure storage. Going with a cross-bed toolbox instead. But I've never owned one.

Looking for interesting ideas on how to store typical truck stuff in your tool boxes, including bottle of fluids. Plus tools, cords, cables.

If you have something special you've done, I would like to see it. Trays, dividers, whatever organizer method you've got.

Can you just put one of these in the bed? Or do you have to drill holes to mount? I have a 350 Dually 8' bed. I was thinking it would stay in place without bolting down? It would be on a rubber mat so it shouldn't slide much (hopefully).

I put two #10 x 3/4โ€ drilled screws thru inside box into front top edge of bed.

Sure, if that's what you want. It would be like any other cargo, and like any load, up to you to decide how or if it needs to be secured. But isn't the whole idea of a tool box to keep people from stealing your stuff?

I'm not clear on if you were asking about the chest style, or the cross-bed style that I have. There are a bunch of different no-drill kits for mounting the cross-bed style. The PO even included a set with the box, but I chose not to use them. I used a J-hook in a stake pocket and one drilled hole, per side. I'm done with the various clamps that loosen up over time.

^ yeah. And there happened to be a Highway Products chest come up on CL. Very good price, but still about double what I paid. I don't think it was the width I needed, or wanted, or maybe I had just already decided on a saddle box. Don't recall for sure, but I know it was too far away to interest me unless it had been exactly right.

Also, I was traumatized by the big clunky hitch that was obscuring a view of the chest in one of the photos above. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Russ, we had the Retrax rolling hard cover. It was nice and worked great with the fiver. After the second cover split I didn't want to replace it again. Time to try something different. I do have the Customflow wedge insert. Only used it rarely.

One thing I like about the saddle box versus a chest, is I can haul 8' sheet goods again.

Thanks for all your inputs. I found this cheap on Craigslist and installed it this morning. Kobalt is the Lowes brand, but it is the Better Built product, which they make no effort to hide at all.

Nice Low Profile over rails, but it becomes more difficult to put a bed cover on.
We full time so keeping the dry when not towing is important, that is one of the many reasons we went with below the rails tool box. It looks like you have a Custom Flow 5er tailgate, add a filler panel and the bed could be secure.

True. One car garage. We live in a townhouse. Most of the time I just back out in the driveway when I need the garage for a project. Both cars are electric so not much to do there. Washer fluid once a year. :).
