Torque converter does not unlock-update #2 8-25

My torque converter seems to be always locked in 2-3-4 and just releases in low gear. Also seems to short shift at part throttle compared to before. Makes driving a bit awkward. Anything easy to check? 185,000 miles on the 4R70W transmission and still has a firm shift in all gears. I assume if I take it in I would be sold a new trans and TC that I don't think I need yet.

Agreed. Good and bad news I guess. Maybe bring you wife to test drive new trucks next time around... 😉

As long as it is a real fix that lasts as long as the remaining life of the clutches/transmission then it is for the better.

It will kill me if the clutches give out in the next 5,000 miles or 12 months as I will be wishing I had just done the whole exchange instead of the patch.

Time will tell.

Valve body is getting rebuilt at the dealer for $840.
That is good and bad I suppose. DW would not let me look at new trucks 😉

I will pick it up on Saturday. Should be good for another 10 years as I mostly just use it for towing now. Maybe 5,000 miles per year.

As I was returning I noticed the OD light is flashing. I am sure that is bad but seems to be shifting fine.

That means there was a problem detected in the transmission. It could be anything from a minor wiring issue to needing a new transmission. I will guarantee that if you ignore this you WILL need a new transmission.

OD light flash8ing on my ole F250. The speed sensor went south. Easy plug and play on the rear differential housing on that vehicle.

I would check it out with a reputable transmission shop.

OD light flashing is not good. It means the TCM has detected a fault. You will to pull the codes, because it can be anything from a bad speed signal to excessive temps or slipping.

Today I was going to take the truck in and it seemed mostly back to normal. So I circled around for a 20 mile test drive and headed back to storage. As I was returning I noticed the OD light is flashing. I am sure that is bad but seems to be shifting fine.

I did have a bad alternator in Gillette WY about the time this started. Could it be a low voltage issue? Transmission computer seems to have mostly relearned how to shift.

Any thoughts?

I can tell you this, when the trans shop told me I needed to replace the converter in my Ram I blew them off. Less then six months later I was having the whole trans rebuilt and a new converter. They told me had I just replaced the converter before the trans would have been fine.

Don't wait to have it looked at but with 185,000 miles I'm betting your going to need a total rebuild.

Good luck Don

If parked and I move the selector to 2 the engine will stall. sequence P-R-N-D-2-1
When slowing in D to a stop it will nearly stall before it gets to low gear.
Usually it would lock in 2-3-4 once it was done shifting to smooth things out. Now the shift is very abrupt/harsh with the TC locked. Especially the downshifts.

Fluid was changed 5k ago with the same Mobil 1 synthetic.

Driven over 3,000 miles with no engine light the past three weeks pulling the trailer from CA to SD and back.

Too hot today upon return to check all connectors etc. Thanks for the tips. Anything to add is appreciated 🙂

Not sure about yours, but my Allison 3060 remains unlocked until halfway thru 2nd. It stays locked until returning back to 2nd halfway. Sounds normal to me.
