New to towing, but here's the setup we're looking at. Does this look reasonable? Am I overlooking anything? (will have WDHitch, sway bars and such)

2014 Jeep GC 4WD EcoDiesel
(Specs: GVWR 6,800 / TR 7,200 / GCWR ~13,000)
Est. GVW 6,500
+Curb W: 5,300
+Payload: 600
+Tongue W: 600

FR Grey Wolf 19RR Toy Hauler (GVWR 7,575)
Est. GVW 6,000
+UVW: 4,300
+Est. Payload: 1,500
+200 lbs (for margin of error)

GCW = 12,500

See the below link :
I would be looking at the C-L models in the 14 ,
maybe 16 models.

Weigh your Jeep with all your stuff/people in it and you will see that the payload is limited once you pack it for a trip.
You have to pack your stuff somewhere . Load up the Jeep or load up the trailer, its all weight that must be spread out between the two. You cant over-pack the trailer either...axles/tires .

"IF" the GC has unibody construction confirm with Jeep what the Hitch carrying capacity is. I had a Dodge Durango that pulled my current trailer just fine, however because of the unibody construction my hitch was only rated at 720lbs. My tongue weight was 800lbs (even though Mfg said it was 413lbs). I had to upgrade the vehicle because of this.

Beginning with the 2011 model year, the Durango and the Grand Cherokee are the same vehicle.

IDK you really should weight the jeep before you buy anything.. This will tell you exactly what you can tow.. Full tank gas and all people and gear..

You could just buy willy nilly maybe .

As said the uni body construction on the jeep.. as well as coil springs IMO is not a good thing..

Also if you buying something the cheaper trailers with no shower surround is crazy.. IDK how water sprayed on the Luan is supposed to last.

Get a unit with at least that..

And definatly a trailer with two axles.. Not one..

Just my opinion...

This still might be a bit heavy but just showing you there are a bit nicer units out there..

What about with this trailer (same vehicle)…

FR Wildwood X-Lite Toy Hauler (GVWR ~5,500)
Est. GVW 4,600
+UVW: 3,100
+Est. Payload: 1,500

2014 Jeep GC 4WD EcoDiesel
(Specs: GVWR 6,800 / TR 7,200 / Max Payload 1,270 / GCWR ~13,000)
Est. GVW 6,500
+Curb W: 5,300
+Payload: 1,200
(Psgrs 600 + 13%TW 600)

GCW = 11,100

The Jeep's payload number of 600 is glaring. If that is correct, the trailer empty will be too much after you place a second person in the tow vehicle and 80-100 lbs for the WD hitch.

Tongue weight should be 15% of trailer weight, so 6000 lb trailer, = 900 tongue weight.

I interpreted that as he's figuring 600 lb of stuff and people in the Jeep, and 600 lb of tongue weight on the hitch ball.

I don't think the short wheelbase unibody GC is up to it, but that's just me.

This pretty much sums it up

Sorry to burst your bubble, but too much trailer for too small a tow vehicle. A small pop-up camper will just about be the limit of what your Jeep GC can pull.

Nah, they could probably pull a 18-20' light trailer as long as you kept the stuff in the vehicle to a minimum and only two people. My 3,600 GVWR trailer with a tongue weight under 500lb wouldn't be too much for a GC. But upping that to a toyhauler is in fact asking too much of the vehicle. Time to get a bigger tow vehicle if he wants to bring the toys 😃

Hmmm payload is only 1050 lbs to 1270 lbs depending on model... Page 7.

Weight the jeep as I stated above...Post back with front and rear axle weights from the scales.
