Some may still be interested in truck camping on the ragged edge.

Original post:
my truck

This picture was taken at the end of my first real camping trip.

800 some miles traveled and averaging 25 miles per gallon!

Am I ever pleased with my new truck.
Camping in it still needs a few adjustments yet I am encouraged.

I know it's small, But 25 mpg on regular gas!

Started in the South Sound drove to Port Townsend for the Wooden Boat Festival.
Having built three wooden boats I found many kindred sprits in attendence.

Took the ferry to Widbey Island, always love using the Washington state ferry system.
Going to sea in a road vehicle has always thrilled me.

Then Highway 20 to Baker Lake where I had the wonderful experience of seeing a small black bear. It was just as interested in me as I was in it. Tried to get a picture but it was gone when I found my tablet, Rats!
Told the campground Host about the bear and they said it had been in the area.

On to The North Cascades National Park I now have a NCNP ball cap.
The old Western town of Winthrop was next.
Met a lady in a wonderfully restored 1965 Chevy regular cab pick up. She was even sleeping under a topper just like me.

Her Chevy had a big V8. But my V6 gets 25mpg.

Sorry about no pictures but camera stayed home only had my tablet computer along.
Down to Wenatchee and home to the south sound great trip in great weather.
Sorry for the lame trip report but it was fun and 25mpg made me very happy.

Love the camping on the cheap simplicity. Had a S10 set up like this once. Girlfriend at time loved to camp with me. Got 23 mpg. Now married to wife and the rig is a little fancier and she loves camping with me. I like what you have there and hope you have a blast!

I spent a couple of months in an old Toyota T100 pickup with a simple topper on it - camping in Utah, places nobody else goes (Bookcliffs, desert around Price and Green River, etc.). The simplicity was great. I also had 4 dogs with me and they loved it, too. Really got out and saw some backcountry. I'll never forget waking up one morning to someone looking in at me and the dogs - a very curious antelope.

I like reading about your adventures LS......I am fastinated by small truck campers lately, dont know why......I dont think I could go as small as you have gone, but a small popup on a 6 1/2 ft bed is about my speed.

Some of my best camping times was in the high country around Arizona... Several of us had our OFF-ROAD JEEPS pulling small utility trailers loaded down with all of our tent camping items...

We for sure didn't get the gas mileage you are getting but had lots of great times camping way back off the main roads back then...

We looked alot like these google imagine photos from the Jerome and Smiley Rock areas taken back in the same time frame...

Going small has it big advantages...

We drag our 2008 OFF-ROAD STARCRAFT 14 R/T all over the mountains around us hre in Virginia and down south along the Blue Ridge Parkway and have gone as far West as Okla and North Texas... Always have great times in our 12-foot base POPUP trailer...
