Avion truck campers - Hundreds of photos

Without going into too much painful detail, we had a mishap several week-ends ago. While working with sand bag crews on the Mississippi River, the truck and camper fell into the flood waters as a road collapsed. Because of a number of issues dealing with the wrecker truck, we had to release the camper as the truck was reeled up over the bank. The good news is that the truck is as good as new after a thorough rinsing, inspection of brakes, etc. The bad news is that the camper was thoroughly drowned. A lot of people had far worse trouble than we did, so we consider ourselves lucky. The floods are ongoing as I write.

Our planned trip to Montana in June is called off. heh.

However, I have now convinced my dear Jane that its time to really update the TC. After drying for several days we pulled out the interior. Amazingly the Zolatone paint that I had applied last year is good as new after a cleaning.

Without burdening the TC family overmuch, I'd like to ask some advice other than don't park too near a flood :-).

My DW was overjoyed that I had a plan for the bathroom: a composting toilet developed by Nature's Head http://www.natureshead.net/. Our holding tank was practically unusable and there was no real grey water tank on the 67 Avion. Our plan is to rip out the bathroom and install one of these and converting the blackwater to a greywater tank. Any experience with this?

Finally, the roof. I admit that I have not really done the work I should have. Now, I need to remove the various sealants on the roof and repair it. We are also setting up for a solar installation. Any advice as to this?

Here's hoping I have posted the pictures correctly. And many thanks in advance for your advice.

Well, good for you Garry. I know you've wanted the Stablelift for some time. It's a bit ironic, but I remember folks talking like the Stablelift just had no place amongst the "authentic" Avions. I remember the same thing about mounting an Avion in a trailer like Rasta is doing. Goes to show you that the Avion is flexible as are the owners.

Got the C10 up on my F350 today. Cinched down for now with the normal tiedowns to the jacks. Next step is to tear down the interior to access the wings for removing the jacks and then mounting the new system.
Little by little.

Garryk6...good luck with that, it will be a challenge.

I now have my C10 mounted on a 12' car trailer, Once you get by how wrong it looks to have a TC on a trailer,it grows on you. It actually may work out pretty good. Function over Form. The tie downs will be perfect. Tongue weight is right and adjustable by sliding the TC back or forth, and plenty of storage area. Not to mention how easy it is to get in and out, being that low.

I did end up raising the camper 8 1/2" using a combination of 2x6 screwed to the underside, and a 4"x4" frame with 3/4" ply platform.I also used a 4' x8' x 1/4' sheet of rubber to provide traction on the aluminium trailer floor.

Now I am just trying to figure out how to place and attach the grey water tank beneath the trailer.

I will post pictures soon, If you all promise not to laugh.....

I may try to get my C10 down off the saw horses tomorrow to get it low enough so that I can start prepping the camper for the new stable lift being built in Montana now.
Hopefully will get to use it this fall.
I hope everyone else is getting to use their Avion this summer.
Hope to hear from more of you soon!

Is there any chance you could post some photos?
Matt did you reinforce the floor to hang an additional 360# on the overhang ? I'm not sure an Avion floor could take it .

I only used this method for transporting empty between camps in this configuration.

When I was using it, the camper was generally off the truck, so I either just hitched it to the truck and towed it to a dump site (if it was in a short distance), or used a set of harbor freight tailgate ramps to roll it up into the back of the truck to haul.

These aren't the best photos of it in use, but they're the only ones I have of it in play during a 10,000+ mile journey across the country.

You can see it poking out a bit from the underside of the rear overhang. The tanks hanging upside down so that it had a flat surface to clamp up against the underside of the camper's main holding tank.

Ticki2, I am forever amazed at your depth of knowledge, and willingness to share it. Thanks!

On another less pleasant subject. Does anyone have any experience with portable waste tanks? In particular using them for both black water as well as grey water....and where in the world do you store a tank? I can imagine stuffing it into the bathroom, I suppose. But, unless its really clean it could be a problem, not to mention bulky and in the way.
