Logically, an engine fire is no more likely in a chinese generator than in an Onan but you're probably right that if a fire did occur insurance would refuse to pay. Insurance companies are notorious for trying not to pay if they can get away with it. Just ask Hurricane Katrina homeowners. Its also logical that a $300 generator will not have as stable a voltage, frequency or waveform as a multibillion dollar power system, nor will it have as many protective systems built in. I have surge suppressors on all my home electronics and if you're not using them on a small generator then you're asking for trouble. I appreciate your warnings and well written info but it seems some people don't want to heed your warnings. That's their decision, you tried, they didn't listen, just let it go. This has been a tremendous forum and I've learned a lot in the 2 years I've been following it. I hope the info can continue to flow for quite some time.Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info. Most air conditioners I have run across have a label on them saying wait 2 minutes before restarting because of the high head pressure. The generator will bog down because the air conditioner is in locked rotor mode until the high head pressure decreases. A 13500 btu AC may draw up to 60 amps when in locked rotor mode(about 7200 watts), far too much for a 3000 watt generator. Even when hooked to home power the AC may not start immediately. Instead it may trip an internal automatically resettable thermal safety switch until the head pressure decreases.Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.My suggestion is you get a dual 15 to 30 amp adapter, plug it into your dual socket and it will electrically tie both sockets together(if not already done inside the generator) and provide you with an RV 30 amp socket with full power available. An online site to buy it is: www.rvsurplussalvage.com Power Maximizer 30 to 15 adapter sku 220500Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.I have a UST TG 3000 generator bought from Pep Boys in July 2005. I have been very happy with it, it is very well built and reasonably quiet. Not very noticeable at about 30 feet. You can have a normal conversation without any problems. I also switched it to propane and I think now its even quieter, I ordered the Chondra 6.5 HP conversion kit from US Carb. By the way, the carb is a clone of the Honda 6.5 HP carb(exact fit). I would definitely recommend the generator. All 120 volt output is available (25 amps) on the twist lock receptacle.Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.On page 90 of this forum allpraisebob published a diagram showing how to wire a 15 amp DPDT switch to make the Pepboys 3500 watt generator switchable between 120 and 240 volts and provides full wattage from the generator in either configuration. The circuit breaker does not have to be changed either.Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info. bassman1 wrote: sidst wrote: I tried to enlarge your drawing but was unable to do so. JPearcy wrote: Bassman1, I don't have any equipment/tools here to try testing anything myself and power electronics was not my specialty so my knowledge about the subject is minimal. However, this is what I've been told. The ELM-3600SS large outlet is both 110 and 220 volt. The full 30 amps is available to the 220 volt. What is not clearly understood by me is that I was told you may be able to get 20 amps off of one of the 110 volt legs out of that outlet and 30 amps off the other leg. It is not clear to me how this is supposed to work. We need someone who knows what they are doing to open it up and check it out. I wish I had some tools and test equipment so I could go check out the unit myself. I have a lot of different duties here that keep me real busy but I need to be learning more about these generators so I can answer questions better and help support them better. The ELM-3600SS is by a different manufacturer than the ELM-3000, so I think I can get the wiring diagram. I can be busy and not check here for a question, so if you have a question you for sure want answered, please send me a direct message, so I don't miss it. Suite 200 Buffalo, NY 14202 716-566-9500 x5870 http://www.eliminternational.com http://www.eliminatorusa.com I believe I can help you understand what's going on with the 3600SS generator. It cannot produce 30 amps at 240 volts(that's 240 x 30= 7200 watts). It can produce 240 volts at 15 amps( 240 x 15= 3600 watts). The two generator coils are 180 degrees out of phase(they add together 120+120=240 volts) as they are connected from the factory. Each 120 volt leg can separately supply 1800 watts(120 x 15) but as wired they cannot be tied together without shorting the generator. So you can attach two 120 volt appliances each that use 15 amps across the 30 amp plug or plug in 2 different appliances to the 2 120 volt household plugs(again each drawing 15 amps) but you cannot tie them together to provide one 120 volt at 30 amps as we as campers would like. To provide 120 volts at 30 amps one of the generator coil leads will have to be reversed to place both coils in phase. In this way only 120 volts will be available but now instead of voltage adding together current adds together(15 +15=30 at 120volts=3600 watts). With a wiring diagam this should be pretty easy. Did this help or make things worse?Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info. bassman1 wrote: JPearcy wrote: If you want 110 volts at 30 amps you might consider something like the ELM-3600SS which has a 220 volt 30 amp outlet that breaks into two 110 volt circuits, which could be used to backup a house for example, though this is still a small unit. Look at the outlet shown on the ELM-3600SS at http://www.eliminatorusa.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=E13&Category_Code=GGEN mrwizard I did read the users manual before I hooked the 4 prong plug up, you can split the 220 to 110 but maybe you split the power in doing so thanks The 4 prong plug is 120/240 volts and you're only getting 1/2 the available current in the plug at 120 volts. The generator coils will have to be rewired in parallel rather than in series to get the full wattage at 120 volts.Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info.Homier Generator specs from Homier Generator 4000watt Instruction Manual: 6.5 hp 3000 watt w/ peak surge of 4000w Electronic Ignition, 4 cycle engine Two pole single phase 60HZ DC Output 12v @ 8.3amps 4 Gallon Fuel Capacity 7.8 hours continuous run time 24.25 x 17.25 x 18 inches dimensions Weight 101 lbs Power output 120 volts at 25 amps 2 120 volt single household type receptacles(unsure if they are rated for 15 or 20 amps each)Re: 3000W Chinese Gensets Info. bassman1 wrote: BUMP I tried to enlarge your drawing but was unable to do so.
