A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

We have a plug in the camper for solar power hookup. So how many solar panels would it take to power the camper?

I emailed John and asked if he would check into us being able rent a generator while we were there.

Good morning everyone. This morning is very nice outside. Yesterday we got more rain so the yard is looking great. I took the camper in for repairs and on the way home I got sick, spent the rest of the day doing nothing but resting. I feel better this morning, whatever it was has passed.

Sue is out with Hobo and Suzie taking their morning walk. Last night we went kind of late but wanted to make sure the girls would be comfortable through the night without worries if having to potty and such.

Izzie is doing well. He ate this morning and talked to us his night and how grateful he was to be fed this morning.

Next week I think we will go to Blakely to visit Robin and her husband Ed. From there we may go to the Gulf. The auxiliary tank is working like it should. This will give us about 600 miles between fuel stops instead of 200 miles.

I looked at portable generators yesterday while I was at Camping World. maybe that is what made me sick. Anyway I just don't know what to do about external power when we don't have electricity this summer when we visit Sue's brother John.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

The vet just called and said Murphy's blood work was "excellent". That makes me happy. After Monty blowing out his knee, I sure didn't want to see another one of my doggies in pain. Murphy will be 14 this June and she still acts like a two year old. I guess that is normal for Jack Russells. I have a picture of me holding her when she was 13 days old. I am going to be a basket case when something happens to her.

Murphy is doing better! She hasn't been biting and scratching near as much on the medication. Her skin is infected which makes it itch so I am hoping that once the infection is gone, she will quit biting her legs. Murphy has white hair and all 4 legs are red from her biting.

She has two weeks of medication to take so I have my fingers crossed.

Good morning everyone. Burch I hope Murphy gets better. Levi our Australian Shepherd has issues with skin problems and would break out with a mad itch where he would chew raw places on his skin and pull the hair out. We would take him to Dr. Alexandra and he would give him a shot and some ointment for the skin. He would have to wear one of those cone collars to keep him from chewing on himself which he didn't care for at all. It was a seasonal thing it seems to me now. I can't remember if it was spring or fall, but on of the two.

Anyway all is well here in the Deep South. It is raining this morning with cool temps out side. The fur gang is well and so is Sue. I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

My mom took Murphy to the vet yesterday. The poor thing has been itching and biting for some time now. She has some type of allergy and her skin is red and infected. She is on 4 antibiotics now. I got a bit of sticker shock at the vet bill but I'll do anything to make her better. I feel guilty for waiting so long to take her to the vet.

Richard, I hope you can get your leak fixed quickly. It seems your last two RVs have been troublesome. I am hoping to not have too many initial issues with our motor home when we finally get it.

I have a friend who had a new rescue with skin problems. They tried everything and nothing relieved the poor little guys itch. He's like a little Pom and almost all the fur on his hind end had been rubbed or chewed off. She took him to get a second opinion. Found his thyroid out of whack. He was put on meds and is a different dog now.

Just FYI. In the even the meds don't help the little one, you might suggest testing. But I do hope the meds help.

Good morning everyone. We got some much needed rain yesterday and last night. The temperature at night has warmed up a great deal with the lows in the mid 60's. This morning the grass and plants in the yard look so good.

Hobo did very well on our weekend camping trip. We used the Pet Loader steps for her and that makes all the difference in the world for her. The large platforms allows her to put all four paws on the same level before she has to make another step. I can't see that she is losing any weight, but we will keep trying.

Suzie's days of playing in the water are over. Without Peaches' encouragement Suzie won't go into the water. I threw object into the water for her to fetch. She would run to the water's edge and stop, then look at me as if to say You must think I am going to swim after that stick? She then turns around and goes about her business along the water's edge.

When we got home Izzie was very talkative. He meowed us all afternoon and last night. Sue put him in the bed with us last night for a short while, too bad he can't jump up and down from the bed anymore. He can't sleep with us anymore because of his having to use the box at night. If he is in our bed he can't get down to take care of business.

We had a wonderful time at Modoc. I get to relive all the adventures of Old Fella each time we go. It doesn't seem like it has been twelve years since we first met him. I miss the times we had together and all the travels we experienced. The last three and a half years of his life must have been heaven on earth for him. I know he was happy as he showed us every day his love and devotion for family and friends. There are some memories we all have that takes us back to a time when all was well in Camelot. Everything and everyone was at peace and the world was happy with all of its beings and splendor was the main theme of the day. This is what I feel when I think of Old Fella and the life he brought to all who came to know him. If only we could live a life where all is at peace and all troubles were banished and each morning we would awake to see the one who makes all things wonderful and know we live in the care of one who gives unconditional love.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

We really like Modoc and this particular campsite. We are close to the Old Fella Trail that leads to the other loop where he visited Bonnie and Clyde every morning when they were camping on site 29
