A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Monday July 5th and I hope all is well with everyone. The fur gang was up and ready to start the day at an early hour this morning. Suzie was leading the charge to roust everyone up and get started as she jumped on the bed and barked in the new day saying, "Let's go, come on lets get it done." Hobo as always was at Sue's side of the bed trying to find an exposed hand she can get to for some licks along with that cold nose touching the skin. Mama was at her usual place at my side of the bed trying to find some exposed skin to touch while Peaches was calling out from the kennel crate to let her out.

Finally Sue and I got up and let them outside so they could race to the peacan tree and circle its base as if chasing some rodent up the trunk into the far reaching branches of the 0ne-hundred foot tall tree. The squirrels were already in their high lofts of the tree looking down at all the activity, most likely thinking how obsured all of this was, but also knowing Susie didn't play when it came to capturing one of their kind in her jaws and crushing the life out of it between her teeth.

Soon breakfast was set for the girls to come inside and enjoy and then to find a resting place until it is time for their walk about town. So much for the Daniels clan this morning, hope all is well in the land of FOOFS.

From the perspective of somebody who only knows you online and isn't very religious, it is obvious why you were in the ministry. You have an amazing talent for finding the life affirming parable amidst otherwise very sad circumstances.

Thank you for your very kind words. I don't consider myself a religous man, just a man who has come to believe there is a God who has shown me Love is the ultimate cure for all of life's sorrows.

Happy 4th of July to everyone. I wish you a blessed holiday and may all your wishes and dreams come true. Mama, Hobo, Peaches, Suzie and Izzie send you their love.

Yesterday I was thinking about Mama and her past life with Cy and how she has accepted us as her family. Dogs are truely amazing in how they can adapt to changes and keep the faith that everything is going to be okay. Mama, Hobo, Suzie, Peaches and Izzie are good examples of accepting whatever comes down the highway of life and stay the course of giving unconditional love and complete trust. I ask myself do I have that much trust to turn over my life to someone else and throw all of my cares upon them to provide all the things that partain to life?

What's so amazing about these animals is no matter what happens, yesterday is gone and nothing can change what's happened, but I have today and with it comes hope and faith it will bring happiness and joy if I just move on with my life with forgiveness in my heart accepting the love that is offered to me and giving that love back in return. Unconditional love is truly an amazing thing.

Okay the diagnosis is Gall Bladder attack. It seems I have collected some stones along the way in my 69 years. Now they want to talk to me next week about removing it.
