A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

I guess many would say it is just anecdotal evidence, but I'll throw it out there anyway.

Inga has always had ear infection problems. A few months ago we decided to switch from Purina One to Purina Pro Plan, as I have heard that it's possible that a food allergy may be involved. Not probable, but possible.

Anyway, my "anecdotal evidence" is the fact that since we switched food, Inga has had ZERO ear problems or infections. Just a thought . . .

Good Morning, This morning we have to take Lily to the vet again. She is still having trouble with her ears. Most of the time she is laying on the floor licking her paws and rubbing her ears. If you try to see what is going on she doesn't want you to check and pulls away. They must be very tender. Also has some round bumps on the nose that she does not want you to investigate. It started with one while we were at the rally and have progressed. Our vet doesn't seem concerned but Lily will try to itch them off. If you try to look at them she just pulls her head away or buries it somewhere so you can't see them. Other than that, both dogs seem healthy and happy. Got to leave for the vets office so I better get with the program. Any suggestions appreciated. Have a great day.

Good morning everyone. Looks as if the thread is losing its following with very few posts. I guess folks have other interest and its understandable. After thirteen years its bound to lose some followers.

It rained yesterday and last night and the temps are so nice outside. Sue has gone with Dixie and Suzie for a walk. Its amazing how well Suzie is doing. At almost twelve years old she still has a lot of puppy left in her. Next month she will turn twelve and the first eight weeks of her life are uncertain except we know she and her sister were left at a dumpster in Burke County with nothing but a fish head and some water. Thanks to Mrs. Barnes who noticed them and called me to come rescue them. This was the first of many to be rescued by the Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue.

Margie Riggs has done a great job keeping Old Fella alive and working to save the homeless animals of Burke County. They are still sending dogs and cats to New England where they find forever homes. That it the main source of adoptions for these homeless animals. I am so grateful that there is a place for them even if it is to the far North.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. No rain yesterday but a nice sun shiny day. The fur gang is well and happy going out the door with Sue for their morning walk.

I had a weird dream last night, hope there is nothing to it. Well I am looking forward to traveling in a few weeks. I have a doctors appointment coming up before we go and then we will be free to travel. I also called my doctor about the pain on my lower abdomen and will go see him this Thursday. The strange thing is when I called and talked with the nurse about it, the pain went away completely. Strange how this comes and goes.

We had a young climber from Clemson College die from a fall in the mountains. This is the second one this year. Sad to see someone so young die in an accident like that.

Our grandson Sgt. Joshua McMillan was at the wedding this weekend. Such a handsome young man. We are proud of his accomplishments he has made in the army. He is still working on being a doctor as he completes his training. In our family we will have a doctor, a pharmacist, and a nurse, all we need now is a lawyer as we already have a preacher. If we can't heal you through medicine I can bury you and then have a lawyer settle your estate.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing you a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. Saturday the grandson married his childhood sweat heart in a beautiful ceremony. It was outside and the rain came just before the ceremony and then stopped long enough for us to get the job done before it poured down again.

I am so proud to be able to perform such an important part of their lives as to officiate the wedding for my grandchild. This is number two I have married and now waiting on the granddaughter's wedding. She says she won't be ready for at least a couple of years as she has to finish college and figure where she is going with her education. Kyle is very agreeable in her decision and says when the time is right he will pop the question.

The fur gang is well this morning. Dixie is begging Sue to take her for a walk. She really looks forward to the morning walk and gets excited when the time draws near. Suzie, well Suzie can take it or leave it, it really doesn't matter to her one way or the other.

Sue is such a great person and so giving to others. We went to visit some of our church people last week that were either sick, old or just lonely. We have a pastor in our church that came from the Philippines. His daughter married a man from Greenville, South Carolina and he attends our cur church along with the family he brought with him. One of his people is in the hospital with a rare disease that has caused her to be in ICCU for a month. She is on a ventilator and has tubes hanging all over her. She is now conscious, but cannot speak. She uses hand signs to communicate. We went to visit her and she asked for our prayers by cupping her hands together and placing them under her chin. Right now she wants to get well and be back with her family so If you will please pray for Maria Garcia and her family.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug fro me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Good morning everyone. Today is going to be a big day for our family. Our youngest grandson is getting married to his childhood sweat heart. They have been dating since they were thirteen years old. They have gone through high school and college together and now are beginning their journey through life together. What an honor I have to preform the ceremony for them joining them as husband and wife. Very few experiences in life have such importance as we watch another chapter unfold for our family. God is good and we are blessed.

We are doing well this morning after a good nights sleep. The fur gang is well waiting on their morning walk. It is sixty-seven degrees outside, cloudy with rain during the night. Sue is well and so excited about todays events. God has given her length of days and for a type one diabetic for over forty years she is in good health.

I don't deserve what I have today but by the grace of God I have more than I deserve. Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

She is back to her normal :R self, Richard, thanks for asking.

It had been almost exactly a year since her first grand mal seizure, so we are hoping they are not more frequent than that. We will be talking to our vet on Monday about how to proceed. Like Doug mentioned about their dog Megan, if the seizures are infrequent, then medication may not be needed or appropriate.

Good morning everyone. Walter how is Inga doing? I was surprised to read of her illness. Hope she is doing better.

We had rain again last night, boy is the grass jumping. The fur gang is well and happy. Sue is doing well and I am having some issues with my colon. We have the wedding coming up tomorrow and we have a trip planned for June, just hope I can postpone any kind of medical exam until all of this is over.

Sue wants mulch for the yard and I have been trying to put it off until the ground isn't so soft so we can pull the trailer with the truck to spread the mulch without bogging down or making deep ruts in the yard. Telling Sue no is like arguing with Mother Nature.

I hope all is well with everyone and I wish you a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them. Keep the cameras rolling and pots some pictures of the fur babies on the thread.

Good morning everyone. I hope all is well with everyone. We had a nice day yesterday with cool temps and rain. It rained last night and its sixty-eight degrees outside right now. Everything is pretty and green. Now that the lawn mower is fixed I can enjoy seeing the grass grow knowing I have the ability to cut it any time I want.

The age of cameras is upon us. They are every where, No animal is safe at home anymore without being watched by the big eye and know who done it. On the other hand it helps keep them safe when you know what is going on.

Dixie and Suzie are fine. They are out for a walk with Sue right now. They love it when its time for their walk. Suzie is always looking for something to chase and we have an abundance of small rabbits and the squirrels are moving in. For the first time since we have been here we have squirrels in the yard. I first noticed one a few months ago and now we have several. I guess when they find the bird feeder I will have to fix the feeders like I did in Waynesboro, I took a 4X4 post, took a large plastic flower pot, turn it upside done, fastened it to the post and them put the bird feeder on top of that. No squirrel ever made it to the feeder.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Richard, Try taking the cables off the battery and sand paper the insides of the cables and the posts themselves. Could have a little carrosion om them just from sitting.

If you are going to Michigan, you can stop by here. I will try to get thr electric fixed.

Good morning everyone. It is raining this morning and a cool sixty-eight degrees. Now that the lawn mower is repaired its going to rain the rest of the week so I can give it a good wok out by the weekend.

The tale of the lawn mower turned out to be like Lemony Snicket's tale of unfortunate events. As it turn out it was several things all coming together to make the perfect storm. However they were all simple to repair it just took a while to figure it out. First the ignition switch was destroyed by what ever was set on top of it which left the switch in a position as if it were turned on. Over time this drained the battery. Meanwhile my jumper battery pack was bad and would indicate it was fully charged ready to go when actually it was dead. After I put the ignition switch in the mower still won't start, putting the battery jumper to it would not even turn the hour meter on so that meant there must have been an open circuit somewhere in the electrical system. I checked all the safety switches which there are five of them and they were all good. The battery cables were all good so that carried me back at the battery. That is when I discovered my jumper was bad and the battery on the lawn mower was actually dead.

I got the jumper pack repaired and put the cable from that to the battery on the mower and it started. and I was able to finish cutting the lawn. Put the lawn mower battery on charge last night and now all is well. Now you know more than you ever wanted to know about the lawn mower tale.

Sue is walking out the door with Suzie and Dixie. Neither rain nor snow. neither cold or heat, neither light or darkness will keep Sue from walking the girls in the mornings.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Thanks everyone who responded about the cameras. Mine is a Motorola Hubble and it just never works. It's supposed to work on our wifi, but that's a stretch.
