A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

Sigh . . . . ๐Ÿ˜ž This is something that we also have to be very vigilant about with Inga. This is especially true while camping, as you never know when a small child is going to run up to you, wanting to pet the puppy without asking first.:E With Gretchen, we wouldn't have worried at all, but Inga is not Gretchen. ๐Ÿ˜›

Good morning everyone. Found a new campground near Savannah, Georgia. Creekfire RV Resort and Campground Is located near Savannah and offers shuttles to and from Savannah The reviews are very good, thinking about paying them a visit.

The weather is really turning into spring. I may have mentioned we lost some plants this year. The rose bushes were already sick but the Crepe Myrtle bushes were fine last year going into winter, but they are dead now. one of our Japanese Maple trees also didn't make it so we are down to one of those.

This weekend we are going to Cherokee, North Carolina for a three day weekend. When I booked the reservations the weather looked great, now its an eighty percent chance of rain Saturday and Sunday:( We are going anyway.

In June we plan to go to Georgetown, Kentucky to see the Ark, Dan and Patty are going with us. We won't be that far from Sue's brother in Michigan, thinking about going there afterwards.

Yesterday we were out walking with Dixie and Suzie when we ran across one of our neighbors with a two year old child. This was the first time we have been in the presents of a small child with Dixie and she went crazy. Didn't care for the small munchkin at all. So this is something new we will have to put on the list of things to be careful of around her.

Suzie is doing well, vey active for a twelve year old. Son Scott little Olie isn't doing well. He has had a heart murmur for a while and now the valve has torn. He is on medicine to keep the heart rate down but the other day Olie got a little too excited and passed out, He came right back but it really upset Scott.

Okay I hope all is ell with everyone. I am going to close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

Very nice Walter. It's a beautiful resting place for Gretchen.

I noticed the redbud tree, green grass, budding trees and that gives me hope that spring is not too far off for us. We had dandelions showing up this week and daffodils but no trees budding and the grass is still mostly dormant. It's been a cold April around here.

Very true never thought winter would be over.
The last week you can really tell the difference with the trees. The buds are coming out more and more. Our grass is starting to grow fast. It is very nice and green. Yesterday was gorgeous no clouds and about 72 degrees. Today we have more sunshine and near 80. :B

Good morning everyone. My son Scott posted pictures on FB of his new truck being hit in the back and a rock hit the w/shield and made a nasty place in it. Says it happened on Interstate 20 in Augusta. The damage to the rear was limited to the bumper, easy fix and a new w/shield will take care of that issue.

Well today is supposed to be a beautiful day with a high in the 80's and lots and lots of sunshine. We have some dead Rose bushes in the front yard that is going to have to be replaced. They were sick last year so I don't think the long winter was the sole culprit. However they surround the well in the front yard as decorative cover so they will have to be replaced, maybe all of them.

Sue has been busy planting new bushes and Day Lilies in the yard. I am not much help with that sort of thing, never was my forte. It has to have a steering wheel, engine and four wheels to get me into action.

The fur gang is well this morning. They have eaten and now waiting on their walk down to the corner and back. Sue lets Dixie into the bedroom to get me out of bed each morning and she does a good job of that. You can't stay in bed when she wants you out. Suzie is really slowing down. She has her spurts of energy and play. but most of her day is spent lounging around and begging for snacks.

Walter that is a nice memorial for Gretchen. She was a beautiful girl. Heart dogs are few and far between, but when you have one they last a life time.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.

We had planned on getting a memorial tree in Gretchen's memory, and we finally planted it yesterday. Gretchen was much loved by many. She was our "heart dog", and shall never be forgotten. Her ashes and one of her favorite rocks are buried beneath the tree. A good rock was always one of her favorite playthings. RIP old girl, mom and dad miss you greatly.

Been doing some thinking about driving and pulling the camper. I am reminded of a story I heard about a little old lady who went to the funeral home to pay her last respects to a friend who had died. While there the funeral home director saw her and asked " I don't mean to pry, but just how old are you?" "Ninety Seven", she replied. "Doesn't make any sense for me to go home does it?" she added.

I guess I have been having that kind of thinking, just sit down and wait until I am called home. Just think of all the fun and places I will miss with that kind of attitude.

Dan Healy said to me I handled the rig like a pro when he followed us to Hilton Head, never a bobble or a miscue. Sue says I an fine and very careful with my driving. So I am deciding on some travel plans for the next few months. We are thinking seriously about coming up to Ohio on October to join you folks in Berlin. Will let you know later.

That would be really great if you and Sue decided to join us.

Good morning everyone. Martyn glad you have made the move to Florida and enjoying yourself. Florida is far better climate in the winter than Colorado. The summers will be hotter and more humid, but you won't have to endure the cold as you did in Colorado.

Walter you are absolutely right. When Sue got home with her new plants I make a remark of how beautiful they were. She really did get a great buy so now planting them will be the next thing to do.

Yesterday I mowed the lawn while Sue finished power washing the rest of the wooden deck. She then put a protective coat on it to match the rest of the deck and it really looks good. I attended to Izzie's grave. smoothing it out getting it ready to put a plastic cover over it so the weeds won't grow on it and then line it with bricks and then putting white pea gravel on it. Sue and I miss that cat and so does Suzie.

Okay I need to get moving so I will close for now wishing everyone a blessed day. Be sure to give the fur babies a hug for me and be sure to tell someone you love them.
