A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Togther they will carry on the Old Fella legacy. Come join us in their daily lives and be a part of the best feel good thread in RV.NET history. The legacy lives on.

This is not a dog related post, but, in the spirt of Old Fella, if you all can possibly say a prayer for our familyโ€™s feline that went missing Sunday night, her canine sister and human pack would greatly appreciate it!!!

Sadly, she wasnโ€™t chipped nor collared, so there is no identifying information relating her to us. (She was a barn cat that was born to strays left off in the neighborhood that adopted usโ€ฆshe came in one day 11 years ago through the dog door and never left. She moved with us 7 years ago to the current location we are residing.)

She has never been gone more than a day and itโ€™s now been 5 days now. She is neutered also, so not lie she would be out for that reason eitherโ€ฆ.

Anyways, I hope everyone is doing well!

PS- Is Waynesboro the town located in VA? Just curious which state we are referring to for the Old Fella pilgrimageโ€ฆ.

It has been a while since anyone posted. Tomorrow my daughter's family is driving down from the SLC area to spend the weekend with us. She is bringing her two dogs plus a Labbadoddle to try to convince us to adopt it. It is about 8 months old and is already house broke, cute picture. His name is Noodle and he is a white curly little guy. We'll see if we can accept him. Our two Shih Tzu's have passed over the last year. Never had a dog this size. I'll let you all know how it goes in a few days.

Good Morning FOOFs

Had a great time at Jetty Park at Cape Canaveral last weekend. Got to see a Space X launch and a lot of Cruise ships coming out of the port. One night the wife and I took a trip on the Casino boat. I really like going over there. We were able to book at spot for next July 4th.

Been slow on here lately. I hope everyone is doing well and their fur babies are doing well. Mine stayed in the motor home the whole trip as it was really hot outside. They like to lay up in the cool motor home.

I stumbled on her clinic and got directions. His little park-let home seems well cared for and he looks to be in good shape. I even found my brick.

Tried to find OFBCAR. I made a few donations back when Richard was still involved so I wanted to see if his vision had survived him. Sorry to say there is no facility. A couple of board members still do rescues from their homes. Most go north to shelters where demand exceeds supply.

Its been awhile since I posted a photo here. Hope I remember how.

What a coincidence. I was there today. Have been on a road trip to Canada and arrived back in Panama City Beach about 30 mins ago. Camped near Waynesboro last night and went into town this morning.

I was their Wednesday. Stayed at the Hampton Inn and had dinner at the Lake View restaurant.

Nice little town. They probably donโ€™t realize they have a tourist attraction.

I am finally back home after my 2 1/2 month sojourn. It started with 2 graduations and then I found stuff to do till mid July when we interred my husband's ashes. My entire immediate family was there except for one niece. It was a lovely service, albeit short, which Terry would have wanted. He can now rest in peace.

Morning FOOFs

We took a 3 day weekend trip in the Motorhome this weekend. I had the motorhome detailed and it looks nice. It was really hot this weekend so the doggies basically sat inside the motorhome where it was nice and cool.

I have a window that is starting to fog up. I have dual pane windows and this is the 3rd one now that has fogged up. There is a place north of me that fixes the windows for a fair price but it is just a pain to take it there. It's about an hour and a half drive and they are open from 7am to 2:30pm. I work full time so there is no way I can get it there during those hours. I usually have to drop it off on a Saturday and then go back the next Saturday to pick it up. I am going to make an appointment once we get back from our next trip.

I topped off the motorhome with fuel Sunday morning and it cost me $125. That was better than the last fueling of $228. Hopefully fuel will continue to go down in price.

Here is a picture of the motorhome after I got it detailed. Still looks like new.

Morning FOOFs

I get to take my doggies to the vet the next two days for their yearly checkup and vaccinations. It will cost a lot of $$$ but they are worth it. My old vet (before he retired) would let me bring all 4 of my dogs (before we lost Murphy) to the office on a Saturday morning to take care of them all at the same time. My current vet, who took over the old vets practice, won't let us bring all 3 of them in at the same time. Reasoning is, if I were to cancel the appointment, that would leave a large chunk of time that is now open and cost him money. I understand the reasoning but it's a little inconvenient now to have to take two different trips and have to miss time at work on Friday but he is a good vet so we do it. Hopefully all 3 will get a good bill of health. They are all getting old (Papillons 12 years old and Chihuahua is 11).

On the way to work this morning, I noticed gas at one station was down to $3.97 a gallon. I never thought I would be happy to see gas at this price! I need to top off the motorhome before our next trip to Cape Canaveral but I think I am going to wait a little longer to see if it goes down some more. Last time I waited on getting fuel, gas went up 20 cents a gallon so hopefully that won't happen again.

I hope everyone's fur babies are doing well. Keep cool everyone!

I am hoping everyone had a great 4th of July. I know a lot of pets don't like the fireworks but, luckily, mine don't seem to mind them and I still enjoy a good fireworks show. LazyDays resort always does a nice fireworks show in front of the resort and our site is usually in the back so it's not bad. We drove the golf cart up front to watch as the doggies stayed in the motorhome.

I took the motor home to a local shop to get some regular maintenance done last week. Since it was already there, I had them change the engine oil and the generator oil. I usually do it myself but I just purchased the oil and filter and had them do it. I won't make that mistake again with a $179 an hour shop rate! At least it is done for the next year.

We don't have another trip planned until mid August. I am taking a Friday off work and will be traveling to Jetty Park in Cape Canaveral at Port Canaveral. I really like going over there and love the Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area. It's really hard to get a site there now and I was lucky as I think someone must have canceled and I got a nice site.

Sounds like a not-so-good time, Wanderlost. Fortunately, I am camped in my sister's woods in northern Indiana and we could barely hear any noise at all. My dog is not afraid, but my sister has three and at least one of them doesn't like the fireworks booms.

I will be leaving here a week from today and headed back to Florida by way of my daughter in Virginia. Then a quick stop at her in-laws who have become great friends, then the dog and I will head to Florida. Prolly go quickly as I have been gone for 2 months.

I had graduations in May and now this weekend, we will lay my husband to rest. It took over a year to secure a columbarium for his ashes due to covid, employee shortages and shipping problems. And I had to choose the funeral director from hell who has caused me untold grief. But the kids are coming in and we are going to get this done so my husband can finally rest in peace. He prolly has enjoyed traveling all over with me and my dog, but it's time to say goodbye. It will be bittersweet for sure. Life is not the same.
