A very old stray {The Old Fella Story}

Went camping this weekend at a campground on the lake, had not been there for a few years. Once there I began to walk around looking at the different sites when I noticed a very old dog. He just lay there until I got too close then he got up on three legs and hobbled away. Just judging I would say he is at least 11 years old. Well back to my story. The next afternoon he wanders into camp and just sits there looking. He looked so sad, so the wife got a bowl of our dog's food and put it down for him and he came over and ate. He then walked over to our dog and the two of them sniffed each other over and then they lay down together for the rest of the afternoon. That night he disappeared.
The next morning he was back and was a little more receptive of me. I looked at his injured leg and found that half of his rear foot was gone. It had healed and was not causing any problem except that he was walking on the stub that was left with no foot pad which causes him to limp. His front teeth were gone except for one canine tooth and it looked decayed. His eyes were tired looking and showing his age. He spent the rest of the day just laying around looking for a handout and by afternoon the campground host came around and saw him. I enquired about the dog and was told he had been there for three years and that most of the campers were tolerant of him and gave him food.
So what to do? Do you pick him up and bring him home or do you let nature take it course. He can't harm anyone, he has no teeth and he isn't a nuisance unless you don't like dogs, and no one seems to mind him being there. He is gentle and likes other animals as seen by his interaction with our dog. He still would not let me touch him but he would eat from my hand. Enough said, what would you do???

On June 28th 2008 Old Fella passed away of complications caused by bone cancer. Fella spent almost three years with his new family and became the icon of rescued old stray dogs. He will be greatly missed but his foot prints have been left in our hearts forever.

Now Charlie, the ten year old rescued Golden Lab has come to be a part of the continuing Old Fella story. (*Note, Charlie took his journey to Rainbow Bridge unexpectedly September 30, 2008)Suzie continues to charm her way into our hearts with her antics as she has grown from a puppy into a young lady. Pixie sent me a PM to tell me that Bill wore his Old Fella Rally T-shirt to the hospital on Friday. Pixie said Bill would tell anyone the Old Fella story that would listen.

I have decided that Bill's name should be remembered by the Old Fella Burke County Animal Rescue, so somewhere on one of our projects we will place his name that he will be remembered. Maybe when we get our shelter he will find his place there on one of the walls.

It was a busy weekend for the fur babies as the family went camping. Suzie showed us something new. She didn't get car sick, but maybe it was the Dramamine that helped. I am hoping she will be able to go with us on our trip to Colorado. I hate the thoughts of leaving her behind. I have come to love that little girl so much that I want her to have the same advantages as Old Fella and Levi. The more she is around us the more she learns how to behave and be obedient. I can now trust her off the leash and to come immediately when called. She has become very social around other animals and had the best time with Abby, that our daughter's Boxer swimming and playing in the water. It was the first time I saw her running wide open into the water and just enjoying being there.

Old Fella also enjoys Suzie's playful moods and makes him feel young again. Well I have to go Izzie is asking for attention by laying on the computer keyboard making it hard to find the correct keys. Isibmmgyhbvsgmnu, See what I mean.

I have had no internet for 10 days and finally got online today and got caught up on all the good news and the sad news about BILL
Didnt realize how much i looked forward to reading Richards posts and hopefully when i get phone service I will be online daily.

We are still thrilled with our Granddog Lola/AKA Sadie. She also was one of Richard's rescues that traveled from Georgia to Missouri. She is such a beautiful Basset and has added so much love to our Daughter's family. She is waiting at the door to greet the kids every day when they come home from school. They had searched for 2 years for the perfect dog for their family and who knew she would be found in Georgia??

I actually found someone trying to re-home a 1 yr old Shih Tzu but he hasn't responded to my e-mail. We actually found one in Fremont that may fit the bill exactly. A female, about 3 yrs old, good temperment and gets along with other animals. We're going to see her tonight. The only issue is she had part of her tail amputated a couple weeks ago and is spinning trying to find the missing piece. So, there would be some rehabilitative training involved. Aside from that she sounds like a good fit.

Just got back from a wonderful weekend with family. YES RESCUE INDEED!!! They are wonderful pets. Suzie just might make the Colorado trip after all. She went for three hours each way without getting car sick!!! The Dramamine seems to work for her. Of course Fella wants to hog up all of the back seat, but Suzie just waits and then takes what she can get while Levi sleeps on the floor. It would be so nice if Suzie could go with us. I have become so attached to her I don't want to leave her behind.

Bill's sudden passing shock me deeply. His presence on the forum will be missed. I hope to have a memorial for him at the Western Old Fella Rally if it is okay with Pixie. I first met Bill last year at the Old Fella Rally in Branson, MO. I liked him from the start. He helped us with the rally and Sue and I went to one of the shows with Bill and Pixie while we were there. Great man, leaving us too soon.

Thanks so much for considering a rescue....thanks to Richard we too will make our next furbaby a rescue. We have always been "breed blind" with pekingese but our next will be a "rescued" pekingese or mix for sure.
