Avoiding Seattle

Hi everyone-
I will be returning from my Alaska trip the first week of August. Plan on crossing the B.C. border and taking the 5 and crossing to Whidbey Island, as I will be visiting family in Port Townsend. I have a Tundra and a 21 foot trailer with 2 cats. Has anyone taken the ferry from Whidbey to Port Townsend? Would just as soon avoid the hassle of Seattle.

While they do take reservations on the Coupville-PT ferry, I've taken it without any. Last time the main deck was half empty. Think around local weekend travelers. Coming from the north I'd try to get a camping place on the island (midweek), possibly as the Fort Statepark right next to the ferry. Enjoy the night, watch the traffic, check with the ticket booth, and cross at your leasure the next day.

Occasionally ferry runs are canceled due to low tide. In the summer that's most likely to happen around noon around the biginning of the month. That's when the tidal range is greatest. But that's also the best time to walk the beach and tidal flats.

Another ferry option is the Edmonds/Kingston run. That's a bigger boat. Wait on Friday can be long when everyone in Seattle is heading out. It's also busy with the even rush hour.

For a double ferry run drive down Whidbey to Clinton, cross there, and back across at Edmonds.

Yet another option from Alaska is BC ferries to Vancouver Island, and Black Ball from Victoria to Port Angeles.

The slip is pretty shallow and there are times it causes trouble. Also, note, reservations required on this route. 🙂

One more, tide table, if worried about dragging travel near high tide.

We just went through Everett/Seattle/ Tacoma headed South on Sunday morning around 10:00, and didn't even touch the brakes.

On the way up though, we went through midday, and it took us 6 hours from Woodland.

You might need a little more advanced notice to ferry from Coupeville to Port Townsend. We took the car, and had to book 5-6 days out. Just FYI.

Thanks, everyone. Don't know exact date I will use the ferry, but hope 2-3 days notice is OK. I have taken the 101 along the Hood Canal with my rig 2 years ago and will go that way again.

We took it a couple years ago from Whidbey Island to Pt Townsend and there was no problem. As suggested, get a reservation and get there early because the bigger vehicles seemed to get loaded first. I think it was about $70 but our rig seems slightly longer than yours so you might find it cheaper.

I did the trip from Port Townsend to Whidbey 3 yrs ago with my 37 foot M/H and towing a PT Cruiser. No problem with length or weight
Make sure you get advance reservation. Its a nice trip.
Have fun!

Have done it a number of times and will be doing it again in a couple of weeks. Waay more interesting and less stressful than trying to get around Seattle on the 405 or through on the I-5. Port Townsend is such a lovely town that I never get tired of visiting. The 101 down towards Olympia is slower and has more twists and turns but is very scenic and low stress. If you've never done it, gotta do it at least once. A 21' TT is a piece of cake on this route including the ferry.

The ferry fare is in incremental lengths. It's a good idea to know exactly how long you are overall in case the ticket guy makes a mistake. There is a method to how they load the ferry and may not be in the order vehicles got on the lot.

Taking the Port Townsend ferry is especially good if you want to head over to the coast like to Ocean Shores and from there down to the Oregon Coast via 101. Another route might be hwy 3 & 16 through Bremerton but that puts you in Tacoma and the Tacoma to Olympia stretch has pretty bad traffic too.

There are a number of CGs along that stretch of 101 if you want to overnight. There is a really nice small one of around 20 sites right on the Hood Canal waterfront. Can't remember the name or where it is, but it is a Good Sam and the old power generating station is across the street. One of the nicest we've ever stayed at anywhere. The trailer in the background in the photo is ours at this CG. Even if you don't need to overnight, it's worth a visit. 🙂

Last year I went through Seattle on the I-5 and ended up with damage to the truck due to the miles and miles of constant rush hour stop-start traffic (should've left home earlier) and weight of the TT. Legally you are supposed to be in the right hand lane if towing a trailer, but that's so hard on the truck and trailer... Never again. 405 around Seattle is pretty busy and there's no good time of day it seems. Traffic got a LOT worse after Bill Gates moved to town. :m
