I am very familiar with the portion of US 271 from Paris, TX to Kilgore,TX where you would join US 259. Good two lane road expect for places in East Texas where it is a divided highway. No problem.

You would take US 69 at Lufkin, TX. Then TX 326 at Kountze. I would far rather take this route than go through Dallas/Fort Worth.

When you get to I20 south of Gladewater go east to the 259 S exit to bypass Kilgore. 259 business thru Kilgore is one horrible road. You can go on into Tyler and pickup 69 south

You have been given very good advice. Using secondary roads in Texas to avoid the big cities and reduce hassle is my standard mode of operation. Almost all secondary roads are quite acceptable, even with a little stop and go through the smaller cities and towns.

I also agree that Gaveston has many good restaurants, especially seafood and Mexican food, and not only at the major tourist stops. Check the reviews on line for good options at the more out of the way places as well. You can get good seafood on the Bolivar Peninsula too.

Have to agree with padredw. Avoid DFW and Houston at all costs. Secondary roads will be just fine for your travels. Been to Crystal Beach a couple times and we have really enjoyed it. Free ferry into Galveston. Have a dinner at Gaidos' Seafood Restaurant on Seawall Blvd. THE BEST bread pudding ever for dessert. Split one, its HUGE.
