We have a week at most to go somewhere cool, no more than say 400 miles from Denver, and avoiding the fires. Any suggestions?

Here is a link to the Wildfires in Colorado You have a whole lot of really Good Territory to Pick from.

Normally IMHO one of the easiest and most enjoyable COOL areas is Leadville -- close and at 10,000 feet is seldom hot, not to mention Quincy's Steak House for a few really good meals. Then maybe a drive over Independence pass for a day trip to Maroon Bells or head over to Crested Butte, and the Collegiate Peaks.

If you just want to kick back and relax hard to beat Golden Gate SP, just outside of Golden off Peak to Peak Highway.

Had to beat your own Back Yard!

The Medicine Bow area of Wyoming is gorgeous and we also love the Grand Mesa.

There are a lot of nice places in Wyoming and South Dakota that fit your mileage requirement. Many are in higher elevations so they are cooler. And I have not heard of fires in those states.
