Hi there,
We are new RVers making our first long trip to Myrtle Beach and are looking for the best route, avoiding the DC area. We plan to stop in Ashland, VA halfway through. We were thinking of taking Rte. 81 south, but not sure the best way to take to avoid DC and all the tunnels. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Take 15 to Harrisburg then to 81. I hate 95 and am in no hurry so I take 64 east and pick up 17 in Chesapeake. Much longer that way I stop two nights on the way down. I leave from the Geneva area. I once took the bypass around Richmond and picked up 95,it was fast, it was rough as a cob, and traffic sucked!

Yup that's the way to go. One mod I did was US50 to US17 instead of I66. Very scenic.

depending on which part of the finger lakes you could consider us 15 south to Harrisburg then 81 to 17 to I95

My favourite route to Myrtle Beach has been I81, I66, 17 to I95. The 17 meets the 95 at Fredericksburg, VA. You can also get off the 81 sooner at the 50 (10 miles or so before I66), which will also meet the 17, but I like the interstate.
