Fishing in BC

Another question for you .......................

We have just discovered that Airtransat allows an extra bag, free, with fishing equipment. Our research into what fishing is available offers lots of information on holidays, expensive days with guides, etc. But what we are looking for is some fishing (salmon or trout) that can be found locally once we arrive at a campground, for the following day, for a reasonable cost. We understand also that there are various licences required.

What we would like to know is how you find out about where to fish, locally, and where you can get licences. The campground, Tackle shops, Tourist Info places or where?

Hiya Magbrin, you haven't said what geographic location you will be in the province. It's a big province! Department of Fisheries and Oceans has all the info you need for closures, etc. You can also purchase licenses on line. You will need a license for either fresh (non tidal) and salt water (tidal), depending on what you want to go for.

Also, There are Canadian Tire stores all over the place. Google Canadian Tire for locations close to where you trip will take you.

They will have lots of general gear for sale. Check with smaller local tackle shops for regional gear. Check with folks at the campgrounds, or check with local tackle shops for conditions, etc. Some of the marinas have camping and charters available.

I was just up on Northern Vancouver Island where we were catching salmon right off the beach.

Thanks, Rick
We have no planned route. We arrive next week and are renting a small RV from Thursday. If you have some good weather on the coast/island then (and not too many people as I gather it is a holiday weekend) we will stay about there for a while. If not we will head east - maybe even as far as the Rockies. Although I had a mad idea of going up to Stewart/Hyder AK, realistically I think we will be staying in the south of the Province, so we are looking at the possibility of coast, river and/or lake fishing.

For web info go to http://www.gofishbc.com/ and
http://www.fishbc.com/.
The local tackle shop will have the current conditions and what is working best.
You need to know what type of water you are in. The Fraser river is tidal up tp the railway bridge in Mission and Fresh water above the bridge. A fresh water licence would allow you to fish for salmon above the bridge, but you would need a salmon tag.
Check the synopsis, it should be available online also.
