We'll be heading out this June for our much anticipated (and many times postponed) trip to Alaska. Leaving from Northern Ontario, we're planning on travelling through Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan etc.

What sites to see and parks to not miss can you recommend in MB and SK? I've ordered some literature, but haven't received it yet and I'm wanting to start planning things out a bit!

Thanks as always, for your help and advice!

We have generally taken the Yellowhead route west from Winipeg as it ends closer to the entry to the Alaska highway. Our blog saved some parks and destinations, the link is copied below.

Riding Mountain NP north west of Winnipeg is worth the stop if you can get in.

Some of the other blog entries may help as well, we've been out there a few times.

We have driven to Yukon/Alaska a few times from Ontario. We tend to skip sightseeing etc. on the way West and just concentrate on getting the miles behind us. Our thinking is we want to concentrate on the destination and whatever time we have on the return trip is spent stopping in the other provinces. It is far easier to return to Alta., Man. & Sask. as a separate trip - there is lots to see in those provinces and they are closer than Alaska.

A lot depends on how much time you have. The whole trip is simply awesome and overwhelming. You will find that a lot of the small towns will have community c.g.'s that often are free.
We also enjoy Whiteshell P.P. on the Man./Ont. border. Ontario P.P. could learn a few things from that park. The sites are huge, full facilities, including WIFI for half of the cost of Ontario P.P.

Have fun planning.

We made that trip last summer and had a great time. It depends on which route you are taking? Highway 1 or 16,(Yellowhead). We took Hwy 1 going out to go thru Banff and Jasper then took the Yellowhead Hwy back. In Manitoba there is lots to see and do around Winnipeg. Hwy 1 is just driving I found but Hwy 16 is a nice drive, lots of farming and small towns with farmer markets.

You can P.M. if you want details going north of Edmonton, gas etc.

We love Western Canada! Banff and Jasper are both beautiful. Wine valley of BC also a beautiful and fun area. We are taking the opposite path - entering Canada in BC and heading east! Have a great Alaskan journey!
