First trip in the mountains with my Class A. Going from Groveland, Ca to Jackson, CA (Jackson Rancheria RV Resort). Would prefer not going through Sonora, but not familiar with alternate route going through Copperopolis. How good is O'Byrnes Ferry Road to Hwy 4?

Like mentioned Rawhide Road is a shortcut that bypasses Sonora. But if you insist on O'Byrnes Ferry Road, it isn't a bad road either, but not a lot better than taking Rawhide Road. And if you check the distance on Google, going down to O'Byrnes Ferry Road only adds 6 miles to your trip.

Take 49, but bypass Sonora. When you get to Jamestown, turn left at the light (the only one) on to Rawhide Road. It connects back into 49 and misses all of the mess in Sonora. It's a good road and cuts several miles off of the route. It's no narrower than the road thru Copper.

That stretch of 49 is fine, much better than the stretch to the south, between Coulterville and Mariposa, which should be avoided in an A

Sounds like you're returning from Yosemite (Groveland), nothing on that section of 49 will be as challenging as Yosemite itself (nor as scenic)

Having said that, 49 can be windey, switchback, etc. but driveable. 49 from junction with 108 through Sonora and up a little ways is good roadway. I would drive it.

I plan to join up with 49 in Angels Camp. I just don't like driving through Sonora and the shortcut from 108 to 49 around Sonora is really narrow. I think the alternate route will be okay from looking at Google.
