I'm only about 15 miles east of you, and when we went west in the summer of 2012, a construction-based traffic tie up took almost two hours out of the day, but it was still nightfall by the time we reached Columbus. I agree with the others re: 95, 695, 70, 68, 79 up into PA, and then 70W - the only toll on that whole journey was the JFK Highway in Delaware, which I'm sure you know about. 695 can be a little slow until you get past Towson, but after that it's smooth sailing. We ended up staying at a Pilot/Flying J in, I think, London Ohio that first night. It was about 560 miles in one fairly long day.
suggestions on overnight camping along the way?

We have passed through Waterloo on the way home to NJ from the Winnebago Factory in Forest City IA. Since you want to travel over 1,000 miles in 2 days, I assume that "good, open roads" means the interstates.
For your consideration - I95 to I695 around Baltimore, I70, I68 and US 40 to rejoin I70 in western PA, I70 to Indianapolis, I74 to I80 at Davenport IA, I380 to Waterloo. This avoids the toll roads (I76 & I80) across PA, OH and IN.
We have used this route eastbound to pick up the PA Turnpike in western PA to NJ, most recently in July, 2012.
We have run this route a few times from newark out west. We take 95 to 695 around baltimore then pick up 70 to 68 to morgantown then take 79 north to 70. Run 70 out through indiana. very nice ride through western maryland.
