Palm Springs to Paso Robles options?

I've always driven through L.A. to 101 or I-5 to 46. L.A. can be a pain for the long drive through city traffic. Looking at alternatives which show roughly the same mileage and bypass L.A. Any of these good options for towing a 5'er? Other options or just stick with driving through L.A.

1) I-10, I-15, 138, I-5, 46
2) I-10, I-15, 138, 14, 58, 99, 46
3) I-10, I-15, 395, 58, 99, 46

Ah, I think you're assuming reaching I-5 from the 10 or 210. I'm wanting to bypass the L.A. area. So I'm thinking of coming from the east from I-15 to 138 to Palmdale, then north on 14 to 58 to 99 then 46 to Paso.

Looking at MS Streets and Trips map, 14 north from Palmdale heads straight north to Mojave to pick up 58 west. The other direction shows 14 heading quite a ways south to pick up I-5 N to 126.

I say option 3, but what day and time are you traveling? If you are doing this trip on a weekend I'd take the 210,5,99 to 46 which drops you off in Paso Robles.

The 46 is an easy road to travel and not as many accidents since they widened the road.

If you take the 210 coming up from the south, be aware that the transition in Pasadena is on the far right and it comes up really fast -- the signage is poor. Stay right as you approach Pasadena!

And the 58/99/46 route is ok, but 46 can be kind of twisty and hilly.

Is there a reason why you don't take 14 north to 58, 99, 46? Or 15 to 395, 58, 99, 46?

Might just be me but you'll encounter the brunt of traffic on 10 to 15, 15 to 210, 210 to 5. If you made it to the 5, I would just do 5 north to the 46 west. Seems like a straighter shot to me.

10W to 395N to 58W to 99N to 46W. I like back roads (Black Highways) another interesting way to go Palm Springs 62N to Yucca Valley, 247 W to Victorville then W to Adelanto & 395N to 58W,to 99N, to 46W. Dick

I disagree with those So Cal residents that say 126 is a bad highway. We volunteered for a state park in Ventura for 7 years and coming in from I 10 you should avoid any LA traffic that you can. I vote for the I 10, I 15, 138, 14, I 5 (for only 5 miles) 126 over to the 101. We have traveled the 210 and it mostly sucks, 4 or 5 lanes going each way and driving or towing an rv can be nerve wracking, it clogs up early. 138 to the 14 misses all that and is an easy drive, we also like driving the 126 because you can enjoy the views of the produce being grown. If you do choose the 138 watch for the signs that say Pearblossom Hwy (to the left) or you end up in downtown Palmdale, also not fun.

X3 - This is the best route! In terms of avoiding traffic, and for views. The 126 is a nice highway!

Agree also but you can now pickup the 210 off the 10 in Redlands. Much easier than traveling further in to the 15.

Did a Streets and Trips routing test a while back. From the 210/118 intersection in the east San Fernando Valley the fastest/easiest is 210-5-46-101 in Paso IF you are heading to Paso or points north of Paso. Unless you have a want to go through 101 then 5-126-101.
