Road Construction US 191

For those visiting Yellowstone National Park and may be driving US 191 between Bozeman and West Yellowstone, there is a construction zone between mile markers 57-59 that will cause delays. The road bed has been completely removed and it is a muddy mess. Traffic is held about 15 minutes each way. Do not think I would take my RV this way as it is truly a mess. The rest if the road is fine.

We took 191 into West Yellowstone on June 23rd and back out on July 1st and total delay was less than 20 minutes.

Yes, 287 is a nice drive coming or going into West Yellowstone. If you are going to stay in the town of West Yellowstone, try to get into Grizzly Rv Park, it is one of the nicest, cleanest, well behaved RV park we have stayed at. The town of West Yellowstone is great, prices are fair, lots of variety and convenient to everything.

Per MDT.MT.GOV. expect 60 minute delays, 12 ft width restriction, pilot car, single lane travel. Go to 287. Beautiful drive.

Traveling this way in about 2 weeks in 39 ft 5th wheel(south from Bozeman). So recommend 287 instead or ??? Any thoughts (destination is West Yellowstone KOA)Thx

Summer = construction...... Travel Safely

If you want to avoid that construction area you can use hwy 287 in the next valley to the West. If you have been West bound on I-I90, get on 191 in Bozeman and just continue West on Mt 64 at 4 corners where 191 turns South. Mt 64 will meet 287, head South on 287. 287 will take you thru Ennis to Quake Lake and back to 191 just North of West Yellowstone Mt.

We use this route in the winter when the weather is bad, the 287 valley tends to be a little drier in the winter. You can also turn South just before Quake lake and take 87 south towards Island Park Idaho then take hwy 20 east about 10 miles to West Yellowstone.

Within the park is listed as 30 min delays with nightly closures. The 191 is a widening through tight spots in the canyon and looks like all summer.

is there any idea how long the construction will be going on in that area? I do plan to be taking that route in late July.
