Roll Call Alaska 2013

Just thought I'd start a thread regarding who will be starting up to Alaska in 2013. It would be nice if we could share information so everyone has a memorable and safe trip.
We will be leaving around the end of May out of Las Vegas. We will be traveling with our 40' MH and towing our Equinox car. We are heading up with my husband's cousin and her husband and they have an airstream.
We have gone before but in 2005 so we are really looking forward again to the adventure. It is surely a trip of a lifetime and to do it more than once is a blessing. We are only on this earth for a short while.
Travel safe!

We left Panama City Beach 3/22, traveled across I-10 and up the coast. We are in Prince George, BC heading for Hazelton, Iskut then Whitehorse. Expect to be in Seward AK by 6/15 for 6 weeks.

When we heard about the bridge that collapsed in WA we realized we had crossed the week before ... makes you wonder about all the other bridges that have been neglected.

DH is navy retired and I'm an Army Brat so in addition to local attractions we search for VFW, American Legions, AMVETS or Fleet Reserves. Didn't have much luck in the states except near military bases, but found a few Royal Canadian Legions since we crossed into BC.

Best wishes to all of you ... BE SAFE!! Pat and George

Please post further updates to your trip n this thread;

I have a question for those experienced with driving to Alaska. Can you guys tell us if there are any good micro-breweries or wineries we should visit? We are driving up from Sweetgrass, taking Hwy2 to Calgary, then Hwy 1 up through Banff and Jasper. Then up to Dawson Creek, then at Johnson Creek up to Dawson City, Inuvik, back and over to Alaska on the TOW. Anything in Alaska would be appreciated too, we are just wandering around there except for a scheduled stop at Denali. Thank you in advance

Great News!!!! Wanted to let everyone know that I called to check on the cost of using Onstar to phone back to the USA from Canada. We found that Onstar originates in Canada to there is NO extra fees to you Onstar. You are only charged the minute prices as if you are in the USA. So I purchased 200 minutes for $39.00 and that translates .19 cents a minute. I realize you have to be in the vehicle to make calls but that's a small thing for us as we will be traveling a lot anyway!! Thought I'd share!
See you on the road!!!

Keep in mind that Onstar won't work on much of the Alaska Highway. Similar to cellular service, it will work in the communities only. Thus it isn't a popular feature here in Yukon!

Found this coverage map online
https://www.onstar.com/web/portal/coveragemap
Visit the link to see the whole map.
Here's a bit that would post online here ...

My wife and I plan on heading north on the 10th of June from Central Oregon. I just want to mention it is snowing at our place S/O Bend in the eastern Cascades near Hwy. 97 and more expected the rest of the week. The roads should be fine to drive during the day but icy at night if you plan on coming through eastern Oregon.

Hi all. I am envious of you driving to Alaska. We didn't have enough time for the drive so are flying to Anchorage 7/3 and renting a 31'. Pushing up to Talkeetna that day then on to Denali the next. Will drive the Denali Hwy and go through Glenallen to Valdez hop a ferry to Whittier and spend most of our time on the Kenai. Lot's of good info here thanks to all. Hope to see some of you up there.

BTW gas in Minnesota is currently $4.30/gal.

If you are planning on crossing over the line on the 1st or 2nd of May might I suggest a time machine so you can go back in time as it is already May 19th.:B
