Thanks all for the good information. You have given me some great ideas and choices. We will go up one way and back another to see as much as we can on this trip.

Depends on what you want to see. There are some wonderful national parks to see by going through AZ into Utah. Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Zion, Bryce, Escalante, Capitol Reef. You can even go east to Mesa Verde from AZ & then return to 191 up to Moab. The secondary roads are very good. No need to travel interstates to get to Moab. Have a great trip!

Hi we came back to Texas, from Moab (with a stop at Cortez for Mesa Verde, worth a night at least)using some of the route described . We took I 40 east from ALB. to Amarillo then 287 south, you could take 281 from there (or go up 281 and then 287 to 40 ect)

Not much to see between ALB and Cortez on 550 and not many places to stop before Farmington. 491 heads to Cortez via 64 first, and then 191 to Moab

we like going up through NM.
we take I 10 to Ft. Stockton, (Comanche Land RV park, cheap, easy off/on highway)
285 up to Roswell NM and then 380 over to I 25 (federal campground just east of Carrizozo, very nice, elec, water and dump)
then up to Bernalillo and take 550 up to Durango, CO.
Then 160 to Cortez. Mesa Verde National Park campground. not fancy, but adequate.
then 491 up to Monticello UT and 191. The last 30 miles of this road might be rough.
Then north to Moab.
