Sonora TIP

OK, I've driven from Denver through Vegas, Mexicali into San Felipe, over the back road through Coco's corner and I'm now sitting on the beach in Los Barriles.

Wanting to avoid about 500 extra miles, if I take the ferry from Santa Rosalita to Guaymas, do I need a TIP? I really don't believe so, but any input? Thanks.

Sorry, but I am no one's ambassador. I call it as I see it. So be it. And that is all I have to say about that...

Other note:

Empalme is to the EAST of Guaymas when southbound on Mex 15-D. Toward Navojoa, Los Mochis, Mazatlan and Argentina.

There is a checkpoint at the border with Sinaloa that all cars with extraneous plates are directed to divert into. The guy looks at the window hologram and you pass slowly under the canopy.

The last time I checked the ferry at Sta Rosalia wanted THREE HUNDRED FIFTY DOLLARS for a small towed and me. Not bad. Almost five dollars a mile.

Tallyho69 & Moisheh are 100% correct. It is the same as the border patrol agent working the Southwest. He is doing what he/she is told. I always try to make his/her day as pleasant as possible. This is the same in most case in Mexico & we do represent NOB.

If you have a complaint about the tolls or the road the poor guy in the booth is not the culprit. You can ask him for the 800# or the email address of the right persons.

Remember, he just works there. He probably has never laid eyes on the stretch of road that he is collecting the toll for.
You are an ambassador for everyone from the US. Please make us look good, not bad.

Made it to Guadalajra without mishap. Managed to negotiate traffic. I did not hear of anyone being held up. No road blocks of any type, no bribes, no nothing. The only detours were the often present road detours, typical for Mexico. I did get into a shouting match with a toll booth operator when I told him we should be getting money back instead of paying. We had just come out of a road under construction, after having come out of another bad section of road. So, in effect, we paid for driving down a rutted road, and I was not too happy. He was not too happy to hear me complain either.

Believe me when I say this, since I just drove from Nogales to Guadalajara. The line at immigration was about two blocks long. It took about two hours to get to a window to get the permit. The crowds this year were unbelievable. Do not travel during 12/19 to 1/5, unless you absolutely have to, otherwise, you will be cursing all the way.

Although I have heard rumors that they will not let you onto the ferry unless you have a TIP. Mind you these are unconfirmed rumors. Maybe someone who has made the trip west to east can shed a little light on this.

Getting a TIP is easy, and not expensive. Why limit your options?

Thanks. That's what I thought.

Because if you turn right you are going south, deeper into Mexico and out of the Sonora Free Zone where TIP's are required.

As long as you turn left off the ferry you don't need a TIP, the Sonora Free Zone extends down to Empalme, which is actually a little north of Guaymas but they lump it in.
