Weather Concerns

Having never driven east ward, I will be taking the grand child to Disney World from Denver the week before Christmas and was wondering what would be the best route to avoid any weather. Given things change but what would my best bet be ?

Denver to Limon on I 70...take US Hwy 287 all the way to I 45 south of Dallas...at which point the choices differ from going south to Houston or north to I 20 and east from those points. US 287 is the route that truckers use when transiting in that direction...flat...lots of 2 lane lots of divided, but not heavy with traffic.

Going south to El Paso and then east adds 500 miles compared to going east to St Louis and then SE. If there aren't any storms, is that worth it?

If there is bad weather close to Denver, I imagine going south on I25 would be just as bad as going east on I70. I25 climbs to a low pass on the state line, while I70 is downhill all the way to the Mississippi.

Personally I would get information on several routes, and then make a choice based on the 7 day forecasts when I leave. Bad weather across the middle part of the route can come in two forms - storms from the west the cross the Rockies and move out into the plains, or a Canadian cold front moves south and clashes with warm moist Gulf air.

You would have a great amount of difficulty avoiding ALL weather but head south you can avoid bad winter weather. I'd simply look at nationwide forecasts when it's time to leave to make your decision on something much better than guesses two months in advance.

(If you want to avoid the steep toll on the Turnpike, drop over to US441 and then South. Free, but lots of stoplights.)

Drop south from Denver to I-10 and follow that across to I-75 in Florida then take that south to the Florida State Turnpike which will take you to Orlando.
