2017 Solar Eclipse

I am thinking of heading down from Massachusetts for the August 21st solar eclipse. My son, age 13, is very interested in going to see this. I have seen a few websites with the course of the eclipse and see it goes though SC and tip of western NC. I have also read that Franklin, NC or Columbia, SC area might be good spots. Anyone have any suggestions or recommendations. Campgrounds or other thoughts

Thanks

Here's where the forecast for August 21st is located: http://eclipsophile.com/americas-eclipse/

Or it will at least give you good odds on what the weather/cloud cover will be like for your location.

P.S. I just finalized our camping reservations. We'll be in the Oregon Cascades just south of Mt. Hood. We will see 1 minute, 10 seconds of totality.

If you don't have reservations yet, you better hurry!!!!

And traffic will probably be solid gridlock (hours and hours) in lots of places on Monday morning. You need to be in place by Sunday night at the latest.

The town where I would like to be has 6000 people. They are expecting 25000 more people in town for the eclipse. And they are charging $300 for a three night minimum for dry camping in a farm field.

IN Franklin, NC the Great Outdoor Resort is a very nice campground to stay at. Outside of Clemson, SC is Crooked Creek in West Union, SC, is right on a lake. There is a good COE campground in Clemson, Twin Lakes. There are a couple more COE's in the area, and all are top notch. Just checking, there appears to be quite a few spots at the COE's right now as the reservation date just opened up.

Whats a COE

COE= Corps of Engineer campground. Most we have visited and camped are very good.

I just fired off some additional E-mails to the Rexburg Chamber of Commerce, Rexburg County Fairgrounds and the University. It seems you can reserve viewing area's at the University in Rexburg.

Have to say thanks for lighting the fire under my Butt (comments about crowds and traffic) to get me a bit more prepared for what may be ahead of us in terms of the Eclipse!

I have to drive a hole 20 mile from my house to be on the totality line, unless I am on a trip when it comes time.

Even in Idaho I think travel on Eclipse will get bad in the area of totality.

I seem to be seeing this opinion more and more. I guess I'm just going to leave early AM so we can at least be close. Make that zero dark thirty if need be.

What ever you want to do, you had best get space reserved NOW. Crampgrounds along the line of totality are already booked pretty solid. We are planning to bivouac in western KY and look at the weather and then decide if we are going east or west from there.

That's another 200 miles than SC for me. My best bet is SC at about 900miles

If you are just wanting to get out and take a trip, the southern tip of ILL is the hot spot, there are some nice campgrounds that are right in the center of the path, ( Fern Cliff State Park ) would be a good one, pluss you are in the Shawnee National Forest and there are some good day trips from there.
