A friend and I might head that way soon. We've never been, so it might be nice to meet up with a friendly face :). Would only be for a few days. Should we bring gifts for the natives?

Slabs are just east of Niland Ca. Niland is on Hwy 111 on the east side of the Salton Sea.

If you are already at Quartzite I would go there just to see Salvation Mountain. Haven't been there in years so don't know the condition since the builder died.

There is a volunteer group taking care of it now. A must see if anywhere near.

Salvation mountain is 2 1/2 hours from "Q"....:E:E:E:E.....Dennis

We drove through there last year and couldn't believe what a dump it is. My folks had told us about times when they had stayed there with their friends years ago and had a great time. I was starting to think they were crazy until we started comparing notes and realized it is a totally different place now. Sad!

I drove through there a week ago and wouldn't stay if you paid me. Bring a gas mask or at least a clothes pin and lots of bleach. That place is a S hole. I mean literal s hole. You wont find a blue tote anywhere around there as much of the human waste is going on the ground.

It's a shame that people would trash a place that all of us may have liked to go to. When we utilize booondocking areas we try to clean up and leave it better than we found it so it will be there for others to enjoy. Having little or no money doesn't give anyone the right to destroy things that others could have also enjoyed.

They argue that there is no trash service or water supply or services out there. If they wanted that argument to be valid at least they would have carried everything to one central dump pile so a loader could come in an easily put it in containers to haul it out. Ive been to garbage dumps that looked better and more organized than that. That place needs bulldozers and 20 yard dumpsters.

I guess some of them expect a boondocking area with full services for free or it's their right to destroy the place. Sounds like a terrorist mentality to me. I wonder what all those tourists are saying when they return to their home countries? It's not quirky or funky or cool, it's just a s hole. What an insult to our forces that were stationed there. Would people in the service take their kids or grand kids out there?

Americas "Last free place"? We are indeed in trouble as a nation!
