Traveling to Missoula the last half of July. Planning on going out on I74, I80 thru Iowa to NE border then north to I90 west. Thinking of returning on I90 to I94 thru ND, MN and Wi for a different route.

I'm looking for suggestions of campgrounds along the way that others might recommend. Allowing 5 nights out and back. Thanks for any input!

Headwaters SP just west of Bozeman MT is a good CG, quite historic as that's where the Lewis & Clark Expedition stayed over 200 years ago, it's at the headwaters of the Missouri River and just off I-90. I'll also vouch for Jim and Mary's RV Park just outside Missoula, good shade, quiet, easy access.

Lake Anita state park in Iowa is nice. Newton Hills south of Sioux Falls is nice. You should stop by the Midwest TC gathering in Amana Colonies.

X2 on KOA at Devil's Tower and Hardin MT for Little Bighorn National Battlefield. There is a nice city campground in Winterset, IA not too far from I80. Visit John Wayne's birthplace and Bridges of Madison County there.

On I90 in Montana we liked Campground St. Regis in St. Regis and Camp Three Forks in Three Forks. We also liked KOA Belvidere East in South Dakota.

Happy camping!

Depends what you like in CGs. Some we have liked, especially if you are interested in a little sightseeing enroute, are the KOAs at Devils Tower (great view!!) and Hardin MT for Little Bighorn National Battlefield. (Both of these along I-90, or not far from it.) Have heard good things about Jim & Marys' RV Park in Missoula but haven't stayed there yet.

We stayed at Jim & Mary's last fall for a couple of nights. Nice place, very clean and well organized, you won't be disappointed.

We like Scott County Park Bald Eagle Campground about 9 miles north of Davenport but that's only about 2.5 hours from Bloomington.
We also like Griff's Valley View RV Park in Altoona Iowa. Not right off the freeway so not sure if would work for overnight.
De Moines West KOA Adel Iowa. Near John Wayne Birthplace and where Bridges of Madison County filmed. (bit of a drive)
We found a reasonable place at a casino in Tama Iowa. Paved hookups with electric, water not at sight but available and dump station. Again, not right off the freeway.
There are several KOA's along that route but they are expensive.
If you go thru Cheyenne WY the KOA is the best option in my opinion.
