Boondocking near Flagstaff

Heading up to Durango in early July from Vegas and want to stop in Flagstaff but don't want to stay in a campground. I have a smaller 19ft hybrid and have no problem getting down dirt roads to slightly more remote areas, off the parking lot at least.

Seeing as how it can be pretty hot then, any recommendations on getting up in elevation a little bit, maybe in the mountain right near Flagstaff?

Any recommendations?

its free, in the national forest, near Sunset Crater, close to the main road.

If you want to camp colser to Flagstaff I can give you three more locations, one is within three miles of downtown.

At hwy. 64 turn north toward the park. About 1 mile north of I40, after passing Kaibab lake camground there is a small bridge. Just past the bridge there is a FS (cant remember the number) road on the right. Plenty of campsites. If it has been raining heavily it may be impassable.

Download and check out the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) for the Coconino National Forest. Take note of the statement at the bottom of the webpage: "The MVUM does not restrict where visitors may camp on National Forest System lands. However, it does restrict where motor vehicles may be used for the purpose of camping. Use of motor vehicles away from designated roads for the sole purpose of camping is permitted on National Forest System lands up to 300 feet from the edge of a designated road where indicated by the MVUM's "dispersed camping" symbol."

You can also download the MVUM for the Prescott National Forest. Pay close attention to the rules about how far you can park from the road surface. It can be different for each Forest and even for different areas of the same National Forest.

Between Ash Fork and Williams (west of Flagstaff), exit 151 Welch Road, large open area on BLM land. It's just north of I 40, 100 rv's could park there but when we go through there have been 1 or 2. no facilities

There's lots of national forest land surrounding Flagstaff.
