Boondocking near Lake Havasu City AZ

We are looking for boondocking - dry camping areas near Lake Havasu City, AZ.
The commercial sites on the lake pretty, and pretty expensive. Anything on the river edge?

Are you sure? They stopped allowing RV's near the end of the runway and moved them further east in the same area. If you drive beyond the old Craggy Wash you will find RV's parked there unless things have changed since last winter.

The "Steps" as mentioned above is very popular.

There are 2 spots just a few miles North of the airport. One is a BLM site, that is visible from the highway and is a big open unattractive area. There was a camp host there last year that was friendly and helpful. The other site is closer to town right at the north end of the airport and it's called Craggy Wash. You can't see the RV's from the highway.

We were warned by the BLM host that it may be unsafe at Craggy Wash due to a lot of homeless people living there. We stayed there years ago and really like the different places to park. We checked it out last year and it was full of people living in old cars and tents.

I'm not saying the people staying there are all thieves but personally I would worry about things going missing while I was sleeping. If you are comfortable in situations like that it is a great spot.

Some really great suggestions out there. Thanks everyone for the input. Looks like we have several spots to consider between now and Quartzsite in January 2015.

I didn't remember any "dry" camping on that property, only the KOA. But there are plenty of places up the street at other casinos for sure.

Yes, but the op asked about Lake Havasu. Lots of RV's boondock along the eastside of 95 heading south of LHC. It appears that lots of them have ATV's though. Some are up on a hill and have views of the lake.

when we go through there, we use the parking lot on the AZ side of the Riverside Casino. They run a shuttle boat all day and night between the shores. Casino workers park there, truckers park there, campers park there. We only stay two or three days. It's clean and quiet and the view of the casinos across the river is pretty at night.
Sam's Club is about half a mile south on 95..for fueling.

For a campground, we have used Davis Dam campground, just north of the bridge.

I have to apologize to all. I read Lake Havasu City and thought Bullhead City and I have no idea why! :E

We have stayed at the area just north of the airport- I believe it is called Craggy Wash. It worked ok for us. Not much for view but it is protected from the wind. Some good hiking there but no tv and pretty limited cell service- as others have mentioned. Turn at the immediate north end of the runway and follow back in about 1/2 a mile.

Last year I stayed at the BLM site 5 miles north of town. I liked the site, but not good for ATT cell, Verizon was OK. Great camp host, Mark was his name.
