Campground near Newport, Rhode Island

We are going to Newport, Rhode Island this July. I am trying to find a campground near there. I tried to make reservations at the state parks, but they are already full. I found two private parks that look nice. One is Whispering Pines in Hope Valley. The other is Wawaloam Campground in Richmond/Exeter. Both of these look nice in the ads. I was hoping someone had stayed at one of them and could give me an opinion. Or, if you know of a better one. I am having trouble trying to decide where it would be best to stay. Thanks so much for your input.

We stayed in R.I. and had only two campgrounds to choose from. Only water and electric in both but they were very clean and had a dump station.
Normandy Farms is south of Boston and is a true R.V. resort and worth every penny they charge. Tour buses come to the resort for day trips. We took the Boston tour and Cape Cod Each was an all day.Others were also available.
Normandy Farms was on H.G.TV ten best campground in the U.S. it was number three

Peter's Pond is very nice. High percentage of seasonal sites, but many transient sites that are very nice. Just be aware that you will be on the Cape Cod side of the Cape Cod Canal, so will have to do battle with the traffic to get back and forth from the mainland. Fri/Sat/Sun traffic can be a real bear in the summer.

Update on our camping spot. We are not staying in Falmouth. I found a campground called Peter's Pond in Sandwich. I was going to stay at the other one, but I thought the extra prices they charged were too high. They charge $12.00 for extra persons, which I thought was a bit steep. But, I thought oh well, I will pay $100.00 a night to park my camper for a few nights. I know we will be in a special area and sometimes you have to pay for that privilege. But, when they were going to charge me $12.00 more dollars for my dogs, I said no way. I have had to pay a couple of dollars before and I understand that. I try not to be a cheapskate, but it was not going to cost these people a dime for my dogs to be there. I keep them in my camper, bring their water from home and pick up their poop. The other campground base rate was the same and they are not charging anything for my dogs. I even will be on a water site. I just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening.

We stayed at Peter's Pond years ago. Can't remember the details, but I do remember we were happy with it.

Thanks, the flea market sounds fantastic. I think we will check out some of the other sites too. I am getting so excited. Cannot wait for summer to get here.

The first thing that comes to mind is Brimfield. It's a small town in Massachusetts that transforms into the largest antique yard inNew England every July, attracting sellers from all over, and buyers who stay and look at the miles of bargains. Sturbridge Village is nice, and you are not too far from LL Bean (on your way there be sure to stop at the liquor store in New Hampshire-everyone does). Mystic Seaport is another place that is unique to the area. If you are into gambling, the largest and third largest casinos in the world are in Eastern CT-Foxwoods and Monhegan Sun (they also have some sporting events, shows, and places to eat). For shopping, there are multiple outlets, but the most famous is at the beginning of the Maine Turnpike in Kittery, and another one in New Hampshire in North Conway, as well as one in CT in Clinton Crossing, and another in Westbrook (for those rainy days).

Thanks everyone. Being from Texas, it is hard for me to realize you can drive from state to state in an hour. Ha. I wanted to find really nice places to stay on this trip, as this is my mother-in-laws intro into camping. If anyone has any suggestions into must see sights in the Newport, RI/Massachusetts area, I would love to hear them. We are planning a day in Newport, Boston, Plimouth Plantation, and Cape Cod National Seashore area. Once again, thanks so much for all the input.

There are ranches in Texas that are bigger than Rhode Island. LOL.

Maybe a ferry ride out to Nantucket

Thanks everyone. We have decided to stay at a campground I found on line in Falmouth, Boston. The name of it is Cape Cod campresort and cabins. The pictures of the campground and area look really pretty. The reviews are positive. I figured we could use it as a central hub and make day trips. We planned on going into Massachusetts to do some sightseeing also. Being from Texas, it is hard for me to realize you can drive from state to state in an hour. Ha. I have never stayed in Wawaloam Campground but a co-worker of my wife used to stay there often with a large motorhome. They really liked the campground. The campground is a bit of a ride (and a bridge toll, $2.00 per axle) to Newport. Staying in CT would be a much longer ride to Newport.

Sorry this is only second hand info about the campground.

edit to add: I hope you are planning to visit Newport with your toad, a motor home would be a challenge downtown.

Iam sorry Rickim, I may have not written clearly. I should have said the parks with utilities are full. We are traveling with my husband's elderly mother and we need to have electricity. Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer my questions. I will look at the parks in CT. And yes, I wish I could have found one closer. Folks did not have good things to say, in the reviews, about private parks near Newport. I am surprised there are not more nice parks in the area. It is such a lovely place to visit and so much to see and do there. We visited that area several years ago, before we had a motorhome, and are looking forward to taking my mother in law to see the area. She has never traveled with us in the motorhome and is a bit apprehensive about it. I want to stay in nice places so she will have a really good first experience. I am hoping she will want to travel with us again!

Burlingame state park is wide open, maybe not around the 4th but......
would look into the high 450 numbered sites
which are relatively secluded and clean IMO.
By the way, no utilities.

Good luck

It's to bad that all of the state parks are full. Fisherman's Memorial was very nice.

I agree with Soricobob. You may be better of in CT.
