Campgrounds in/near Reno?

Heading from BC to Reno in Sept. Anyone have campground suggestions in/near Reno? Are casino CGs as good as any?

We're northerners and used to lots of trees. Is there such a thing as a CG there with maybe at least a few token palm trees? Or are we going to die from heat exhaustion in the wide open spaces? :B

Thanks for all the suggestions.

Our home base is Reno and the first thing I would ask is what are you looking to do in the Reno/Sparks area?

If it is 'Casinos' you have options with the GSR Casino a favorite parking lot to stay at.

Sparks Marina is nice and only a short distance a favorite of ours, Western Village Hotel & Casino. The 'Steak House' is one of the best in town, in our opinion 5 star.

In any case if you want to be close to the downtown things eiher of the above are fine.

If you want to be away from all the hustle & bustle yet only a 15-20 min. drive away our choice is Gold Ranch in Verdi just West of town. They have a small casino, good restaurant, fuel, nice sites with FU's and great views of the Sierra's.

We'll be checking out the casinos which is DW's thing. I usually lose anything I try but she has magic fingers. Last time out she won over $600 in just a couple of hours.

Also want to go to a show or two, or three depending on what's on. Also want to do some sightseeing around time. I know it's smaller than Vegas and hope there isn't as much walking around. When we went to Vegas, we flew. We'll have wheels to get around in Reno.

We're on a slower paced 3 week trip this time and aren't in a rush to see as much as possible in a short time. May stay 5-7 days. Any suggestions on interesting things to see and do? Anything mainstream to out of the way is interesting to us.

Don't mind a short drive from a CG/RV park into town, but then it would be nice to be able to walk right into a casino. DW did some searching and found what sounded like one good casino RV park but others didn't sound as good. Could that be correct?

Haven't decided where to "camp" in Reno yet but have the route from BC to Reno figured out. Getting from Reno over to the coast hasn't come together yet as there isn't a decent easy-to-drive highway west of I-5. Planning on going back up the Or. coast.

Oh lovely! I was assuming it would be cold overnight, but snow in Sept.? Thx for the info.

Now know we need to take some warm clothing and snow shovel. ๐Ÿ™‚

I like Gold ranch in Verdi. Davis creek is nice but a bit of a drive but it is forested. No hookups there if that's a concern. Right in Reno is the grand sierra resort casino. They have a park. No trees but right in the middle of things including all the restaurants there. They give a good discount to veterans as well.

You won't find any trees, however, the RV Park at the Grand Sierra Resort is our choice when in Reno. Full hookups and access to the pool at the Casino etc. We tend to go during Street Vibrations and Hot August Nights Celebrations and reservations are made a year in advance so be sure to check availability in Aug. or Sept. Gold Ranch in Verdi is nice as well but out of town and you still will not have any trees. "Campground by the Lake" in Lake Tahoe is our all time Favorite campground with trees and lots of space. Reservations are also recommended if you want any type of hook-ups.

I'm staying at Gold Ranch in Verdi as I type this and it is nice. I decided to try it after reading Missourijan's post. You hear a few trains in the distance but not enough to disturb you. The spaces are nicely groomed and spaced apart. Very clean. BTW, the KOA is in Boomtown, not Bordertown. Perhaps spellcheck changed the name! It is also a nice park. Sparks Marina is also a good choice if you want to be closer to Reno.

Your best bet for trees is Gold Ranch in Verdi, just west of Reno.

In addition to the above, there is a KOA at Boomtown near Verdi, a very nice RV Park at Gold Ranch a few miles west of Reno and if you like trees you can stay at Truckee River RV Park between Truckee and Reno. There is also Davis Creek County Park and Washoe Lake State Park just south of Reno. Davis Creek has lots of trees.

We stayed at Rivers Edge, a very well maintained cg beside the Truckee river. The only downside was that is directly under the final approach path to the airport, a little unsettling at first. Fortunately the flights end at 9 pm.

Sparks Marina is a great park..just east of Reno. You will never know it's a different town as they are joined together.

No trees, but you won't find many trees in Reno.

Or you could get your tree fix at Lake Tahoe. ๐Ÿ™‚
