Castle Rock Mackinac Trail Campground, St. Ignace Michigan

Just got done with our first trip planning meeting for Michigan 2019 with our adventure vacation partners! So excited. Planning 10 days in UP Michigan/Mackinac/Sleeping Bear Dunes mid-July.

Does anyone have any experience with this campground?

Well, there's 3 on US-2 within a couple miles of downtown St Ignace. One very large, a KOA

4 more north of St Ignace within a couple miles in the Casino area


7 CGs to choose from at St Ignace I'd say is plenty of choices...

We have stayed in 6 of them over the years!

St Ignace population is only 2.400 people

When you drive from Sleeping Bear to Mackinac, make sure to check out M-119, the Tunnel of Trees. The road follows the Lake Michigan shore, winding through woods and along bluffs with views of the big lake.

We stay at the Straits state park every year. The upper campground has bigger lots but is not at the water. The lower campground has smaller lots generally and this is the one we always stay at with our 34' 5th. I would look at the pictures on the park website for the size of lots along with satellite views to see how much room you have.

There are some lots that are labeled as 30' that we manage easily to park our 5th on with no problems. There are some lots that have fantastic views there as well. The best lots of all are directly on the water but unfortunately they don't have electric. Would be worth not having electric for the view though for a few days if your set up for that.

There is a small beach area that is great to throw a chair in the evening to watch the bridge too that is walking distance from any of the lower campsites. Never thought road noise was an issue either.

Be sure to plan a day at least at the Soo. When you first get to town, drop a person with a phone at the locks visitor center and have them look at the board there. You really want to be in the "peanut gallery" to watch them flush a ship through. There is the extension of the Whitefish point museum there too. Then, there are three museums in town, and two are real good. The River of History Museum (closed Sundays) is worth your time as is the Valley Camp museum ship. The Tower is only worth it if it is free with the ticket.
Either river side campground there is good.

Yes, we will be moving from place to place. First stop Copper Harbor area, second stop Munising/Pictured Rocks area; third stop is Sleeping Bear Dunes; then back up to Mackinac area before heading back home across Wisconsin.

Stayed there a couple years back with a group of folks. I was able to get lake side sites for everyone. We were taken to our sites, which were a good size but tight to back into. The park is in a good location to either go north or south for checking out the areas. Had bus pickup to go to ferry lading. I would stay there again for sure.

That's over by the casino. Never stayed but they have a nice location. Not many choices for St. ignace.

The state park is ok but suffers from a lot of noise from the bridge. Semis Jake breaking 24x7 and wild hogs clearing their pipes. Its otherwise so quiet that those sounds really stand out.

Just FYI, from your wording you have Sleeping Bear lumped in with UP destinations. It's a decent drive from St. Ignace to the dunes, at least a few hours, and across the toll bridge.
